April 19, 2021--Chorale Prelude on Lobt Gott ihr Christen Allzugleich by Dieterich Buxtehude

Today's organ work, the Chorale Prelude on Lobt Gott ihr Christen Allzugleich, was written by the great composer Dieterich Buxtehude. Probably meant as an example on how to create a chorale prelude, this is an example of how the Northern European composers would create an elaborated melody built on the original chorale. In each phrase, the chorale is presented in imitation between the alto and tenor parts of the organ. This is followed by the chorale being heard in the upper most voice, but in an elaborated state accompanied by the left hand (playing the alto and tenor parts) and the pedals (playing the bass part). I fell in love with the piece pretty quickly. There is a lot of interesting counterpoint going on in the lower three voices while the upper voice does the elaboration on the chorale tune.
In this recording, I used a Principal and Bourdon 8' with a Nachthorn 4' in the left hand, a Gedekt 8', Fugara 4', Blockflute 2' and Plein Jeux III in the right hand to accentuate the melody. The pedal part was a Subbass 16' and Bourdon 8'.
