The Sun Temple of Konark, built in the 1300 CE. In Odisha it was conceived as a dynamic chariot of the sun with 24 wheels progressing across the firmament. The wheels are placed in the northern & southern sides of the temple acting as Sun-dials. The hub of the wheel casts shadow on the spoke. The eight larger spokes of the wheel cover 24 hours of the day, the duration between two spokes being 3 hours. The smaller spokes represent one and half hours division. Some experts interpret that the twenty-four wheels represent 24 hours of a day and the seven horses which drive the chariot symbolize seven days of a week. The small figures sculpted on the spokes depict day and night time activates.
