The called "Harvard mouse" was a Mus musculus specimen and the year was 1988.
The mouse was genetically modified to carry a specific human cancer gene in order to be used for cancer research. That's why they also called it "oncomouse".
Many other lifeforms have been patented for a multitude of purposes.
Herbicide resistant plants (e.g. rice (source)) and oil degradating bacteria (source) are just two examples.
