Close Your Eyes and Trust

Here in Puerto Rico, a few years ago, a commercial appeared that said: "When you close your eyes it's because you trust." They presented a couple of lovers kissing each other with their eyes closed. What a romantic announcement! I remember that one day talking with a friend we talked about the necessity of trust in a relationship of any kind. A relationship in which there is no confidence, sooner or later will fail. That is why it is so important that we try never to disappoint that bond that unites us to other people, because when a person loses confidence in someone it is very difficult to recover it again.

The dictionary defines the word trust as follows: "Wait confidently and credulously that something happens or that someone behaves as desired." I also humbly think that trust is a close bond that grows over time between people who know each other. We do not trust anyone, we trust only those people who think or believe that they will not disappoint us. Unfortunately and sometimes, however cautious we try to be, we pass through experiences that make us stop to consider if we should really place our trust in X or Y person. But it is also true that there are special beings to whom we can go knowing that they will not disappoint us. Because they have proven it to us with their fidelity.

A very dear friend, a few years ago, was taking some courses to specialize as a special education teacher. I remember feeling very scared because one of the final tests to pass the course, was to be guided by a blind man and go walking certain places blindfolded. Following only the guidelines that blind man gave him. Nervous and expectant achievement to overcome the challenge. The blind man addressed it well because he knew the whole route very well. Is that sometimes to transcend we have to stop looking with our eyes and observe with the soul.

We often want to take the initiative, do things according to our way or point of view. We like to direct everyone we can, but we do not like many times to address us. However, God asks you to close your eyes and place your trust fully in him. It is time for you to let it act, for you to stop intervening and damaging what is about to be completed. Because every time you try to do things your way, you back away from everything that you have advanced. And that delays everything good you're about to receive. You may find yourself frightened because you feel in a dead end. Because no matter how hard you try, you do not see a light at the end of your tunnel. But God does not want you to be guided by what you see or feel. This is something that goes beyond emotions. It is a certainty, it is a will that dominates you and impels you to feel safe in your arms. No thought or person who wants to steal peace, may prevail because you know that when you trust him is more than enough for everything to go well.

Because God has dominion over nature, heaven, the sea and all things. Because when you trust is because you know that person will not hurt you or use anything against you. You feel that serenity and to some extent protection. To close your eyes is to let yourself be carried by the hand of the Lord. It is walking at your pace, at your speed and with firmness. It is to protect yourself in your coverage knowing that everything in time has to come. It is to grow in faith and experience. Close your eyes is to believe that God will work and take control of every issue of your life to achieve its purpose in you.
