Yes definitely it can be negative, I'm from a Latin culture, where this aspect is stronger and in politics it sucks
And the honor I was referring more, is the aspect of a man must "keep is face", when he/she or is family is insulted or injured, and that takes to the negative path of violence in the defense of "honor" :)
That's what a friend I have in east Timor called "honor" :(
They were fight Indonesian domination to keep their honor and this is positive :)
