Jerusalem has been the scene of several days of unrest, a new escalation of violence between Palestinians and Israeli security forces that leaves hundreds more injured, and retaliatory attacks by both sides.
Palestinian militants have fired more than 300 rockets from Gaza into Israel since Monday night, killing two Israelis.
Hamas had threatened to attack Israel after hundreds of Palestinians were injured in clashes with Israeli police at a site holy to Muslims in Jerusalem on Monday. In response, the Israeli army launched air strikes against 150 targets in the Gaza Strip.
