My Coin Collection: Good Old Drachmas - The 50 Drachmas Coin

ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΠΟΛΛΑ.png

The second part of my Coin Collection Series features the 50 drachmas coin, half the value of the 100 drachmas coin we saw last time.

This coin is smaller in diameter than the 100 drachmas and bears a sailing boat on the front and a left side portrait of ancient epic Greek poet Homer on the back side.

The lettering

ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ = HELLENIC REPUBLIC
20 50 00 = 20 50 00
ΔΡΑΧΜΕΣ = DRACHMAS

I also happen to have one minted in 1992, take a look at it...

ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ = HELLENIC REPUBLIC
19 50 92 = 19 50 92

The only thing different is the year. All the other details remain the same.

ΟΜΗΡΟΣ = HOMER

The coin

This coin also belongs to the Third Modern Drachma coins (coins that were minted after 1954 with the re-evaluation of drachma as a measure to fight inflation) and it's a standard circulation coin. It had been around for fourteen whole years, from 1986 until 2000. It is made of nickel bras, weighs 9 gr, it has a diameter of 27.6 mm and a 2.25 mm thickness. Another common coin of the years we used to have drachmas instead of euros.

For more information on the coin, visit its Numista page here: 50 Drachmes

What would you be able to buy with this today?

With a value of 0.15 €, you'd probably be able to buy one piece of gum, maybe a cheap pen or pencil. As you can see nothing much...
