My Trip to Tallinn, Day 1 - Dinner at a Bangladesh Restaurant

On the first day of my arrival to Tallinn my son took me for dinner to a restaurant owned by his good friend from Bangladesh. He said that Rana, that is the friend's name, invited us and had been waiting for us.

The restaurant is located in an old 2-storey wooden building in the centre of Tallinn, just across the road of Vabaduse (Freedom) Square. From outside, the building looks neat and cosy and the same is inside.

Rana was waiting for us sitting at the table in one of the rooms and smoking hookah. I asked if I can take a picture of him. Rana agreed but was too serious. you can see that from the first picture below. He smiled only when I asked him about that.

I like the photo with his smiling face!

Rana had just returned from Bangladesh where he was visiting his parents and had some gifts for my son. He also gave us some fruit from his country to try. They call it boroi. It is of a plum size. Its taste reminded me an apple but my son was for a pear.

Here you can see my son trying this fruit - boroi.

The food we were offered was simple but exclusively tasty. It was curry with rice, some vegetables and fruit.

Curry (meat in sauce with curry and other herbs) was delicious. It looked not as red as in the pictures - the pink lights in the room changed the colour of everything!

Instead of usual bread they serve their special tortillas baked in tandoor. Rana said that they call them "nuns". The nuns have cheese inside and must be eaten while they are hot, just out of tandoor oven. We were given twice as many as in the picture but it was impossible to resist and not eat some of the pieces after the first bite!

Tandoor oven is a special.

A tandoor also known as tannour is a cylindrical clay or metal oven used in cooking and baking. The tandoor is used for cooking in Southern, Central, and Western Asia, as well as in the South Caucasus. (source - the Internet)

I was surprised they had it in the restaurant because I had only seen tandoor ovens built outside before. I asked to show it to me.

I wanted to look inside, under the lid, but, unfortunately, there was nothing inside the tandoor at that moment.

It was some interesting experience with interesting talk about the country I have never been to and tasty food. We thank you, Rana, for your hospitality!

It was quite late when we left the restaurant, time to go to my son's and have rest.
Tallinn is a beautiful city. I took lots of pictures the next day. Will continue later because it needs time to sort them and write a post.
