Last night I had the opportunity to experience something for the first time in my life. I was able to see the northern lights (aka. aurora borealis). I'm taking the weekend off with the family up in Mammoth Lakes, and I heard that a very strong solar storm was happening and the northern lights were visible way south. Unfortunatelly I missed the best night (night before last night), because I didn't know it was happening. But last night we went out to try to see it, and we got lucky. It was not as intense as the night before, and you have to be lucky to be there at the right time. We drove up to a place out of town, where it was completely dark, it was a beautiful night with clear skies, even without the northern lights, the sky and the stars were amazing. While we were there waiting, we saw the intensity of the northern lights change from nothing to prety intense. It's not like up north where you see the green lights dancing in the sky, but more like a red/purple hue in the horizon. Check it out!

Na noite passada, tive a oportunidade de vivenciar algo pela primeira vez na minha vida. Pude ver a aurora boreal. Estou tirando o fim de semana de folga com a família em Mammoth Lakes e ouvi dizer que estava ocorrendo uma tempestade solar muito forte e que a aurora boreal era bem visível mais pro sul. Infelizmente, perdi a melhor noite (anteontem à noite), porque não sabia que estava acontecendo. Mas ontem à noite saímos para tentar ver e tivemos sorte. Não foi tão intenso quanto na noite anterior, e é preciso ter sorte para estar lá na hora certa. Dirigimos até um lugar fora da cidade, onde estava completamente escuro, era uma noite linda com céu limpo, mesmo sem a aurora boreal, o céu e as estrelas eram incríveis. Enquanto esperávamos, vimos a intensidade da aurora boreal mudar de nada para bastante intensa. Não é como no norte, onde você vê as luzes verdes dançando no céu, mas é mais como um tom vermelho/roxo no horizonte. Olha só!
