What Is GHAWG?

#GHAWG is short for "God's Hog: A Watchful Guardian." This fictional story tells how David Guardia, a courier and business owner from Bayonne, New Jersey, US moved into the next phase of his life after spending the final ten years of his ailing father's life helping him.

More details can be found in the first post of this weekly recap.

"What's my mission?" asked the demonstrator.

"That's between you & The Lord who saved me, literally."

The demonstrator squinted hard.

"A good start to finding your mission is to walk away from this." I pointed all around us.
🏍️ While we can't know what The Lord had planned for each and every one of us, we can know that each of us has a plan. Often we don't discover what that plan is until we're faced with a moment of truth where we're on the verge of immense loss. For most people, that loss would be on the level of family, wealth, or career. For David Guardia, it was literally his life when he survived that fuel tanker explosion just seconds after crossing into Iowa from Illinois.

I motioned to Harry to come over. ""How far is Riverside from San Diego?"

"About 100 miles north, why?"

"I know a place which can help our new friend here. If they could help the hippies in the 70s, they can truly help now."
🏍️ At the end of the 1960s and the start of the 1970s the United States was wracked with its own cultural revolution between the hippie movement and anti-war sentiment over what was happening in Southeast Asia. Many cultural norms took a hit or were seriously questioned then. Even fashion sense went south.

By 1966, it got to the point where Time magazine would ask on one of its covers "Is God Dead?" Fast-forward to 1971, and Time would declare on another of its covers that "The Jesus Revolution" was taking place:

TIME magazine covers from 1966-April-08 and 1971-June-21

Although it didn't start with them, the 1971 issue focused on hippies who had found The Lord after being disillusioned by the free love and easy drugs which dominated their lives. What began as a quirky study in contrast between free-wheeling hippies and stuck-in-the-mud churchgoers blossomed into a counter to the countercultural movement. This background formed the basis for the 2023 movie The Jesus Revolution

Riverside, California, US is the location for the main campus of Harvest Christian Fellowship, run by pastor Greg Laurie since 1973.

"So what's the plan?" asked the demonstrator. "Let us go and you stay. Keep us here, it won't be pretty for anyone. Let us go and you ride with us to Riverside with a clean slate. You're over 21, so your fate is what you make."
🏍️ Your fate is what you make. -- This is one of the iconic lines from Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and it's said by John Connor. He was to be the future leader of the human resistance against The Machines, but at the time we see him in T2 he's just some punk kid who happens to be son of Sarah Connor.

Some people don't respond well to religious talk or talk of The Lord; that's just a fact. David Guardia incorporates pop culture into his communications whenever he speaks to people in his capacity as prophet. That's how he rolls, that's how he's wired, and that's why The Lord chose him to be His prophet.

The demonstrator went quiet, then gave the OK signal to let us resume our ride. "Thanks for letting us pass," I said. Then I asked "How about you?"

"I'll ride along."

"Ride with Rhonda behind me. Next stop, we'll talk more."
🏍️ The moment of truth had arrived, and it had passed without incident. What happens on the demonstration side, after the demonstrator rides away with Our Heroes, is left up to the imagination. It's safe to say that these people weren't happy with losing one of their number.

We took I-5 south to Albany before taking US Route 20 to Corvallis. "It's been a stressful 7 days," Rhonda said. "We need a change in scenery," said Harry. Sanjay had an idea: "May I suggest we ride along the coast for a while?"
🏍️ This was the transition to a new tone for GHAWG. It's one of the first times we get to hear from one of David Guardia's riders after they joined him on his way to STURGIS. It's also the first time we have a zapfic entry without lead character David Guardia.

The introduction of the demonstrator (to be named later) opened the gates to new interactions and possibilities for the story-- so much so that the daily zapfic serial #GHAWG had turned into The GHAWG Universe.

"Now you're talking!" shouted Harry. "Primo riding there. Pacific breezes, awesome sunsets, great sunrises."

Harry," I said, "Thanks for taking us to Portland from Sturgis. This time we ride with you to Riverside & San Diego."
🏍️ With his mission completed-- riding through Portland, Oregon, US at night-- everyone was free to go their separate ways. Since Harry and The Mongols had escorted David Guardia and crew from STURGIS to Portland, David wanted to return the favor and escort Harry and The Mongols to San Diego. With temperatures getting colder back east (especially in New Jersey), it was an opportunity to enjoy that famous warm Southern California weather.

We found rooms for the night and went our separate ways until morning. Rhonda and I were going to get a room big enough for us and our new friend. "We never got to introduce ourselves. I'm David."

"I'm Rhonda."

"I'm Lindsay."
🏍️ Last names should have been stated in the dialog, but zapfic limited me to 228 characters (hashtag not included). When it's time to rewrite the story in long form, a few scenes from later will be included here where they make more sense.

🏍️ The ex-demonstrator is named Lindsay. At the time I wrote this zapfic entry I didn't have a family name ready. Once I came up with a scene to take place later, Lindsay the ex-demonstraor had become Lindsay Etxeberria. To most speakers of English (and maybe to many Romance language speakers), the name looks difficult to pronounce; the name is of Basque origin, and its Spanish equivalent is Echeverria. I chose this name to make use of that detail in a later zapfic entry to take place in the Los Angeles area.

Story Arc So Far

Our Heroes finally ride into and through Portland, Oregon, US at night. Just as they were going to exit the city they encounter resistance by a band of demostrators from the black bloc brigade. David Guardia halts the ride to find a way to continue the ride. Both he and Rhonda Bella make a startling discovery.

The demonstrator they encounter in this Portland (not to be confused with the original one 3 time zones east in Portland, Maine, US) is the person David and Rhonda find nearly left for dead by the side of the road in Iowa. This demonstrator was having a personal crisis reaching into the soul, and when the opportunity came to make a change that's what happened. Once Our Heroes find overnight lodging, David and Rhonda let the demonstrator stay with them.

Zapfic Entries 197-204

Our Heroes-- now including Lindsay Etxeberria-- leave Portland behind and all the tension which accumulated during the ride through the Pacific Northwest. They take time to make introductions and tell their stories.

The main story features 7 zapfic entries. A bonus zapfic entry is included to show some of the aftermath of David Guardia's prophesying in Seattle. A number of bonus entries will appear from this point forward, so the weekly summaries will include "7+" entries.

At LeoThreads

The serial rolls on at LeoThreads where Our Heroes ride through Northern California. Some shopping takes place, along with some serious discussion. Also included in a bonus zapfic entry is podcast guest Geraldo Rivera reacting to viral video showing a special appearance by a very distant kin of the Cocaine Bear.
