Instagram is a free photo and video sharing application that is now owned by Meta Platforms, Inc after its acquisition from Keven Systrom and Mike Krieger in 2012.
It allows users to upload media (photo or video) which can be edited with various filters and shared with hashtags and location information as well. Users can follow other accounts, see their content in their feed, react to their posts, comment on them, send messages and even save posts for viewing at a later time.
The app has gained massive popularity after its iOS launch in 2010 with over 25,000 users registered on that day alone and surpassing over 1 million registrations in just two months thereafter.
As of January 2023, there are over 1.44 billion global active users, making it the fourth most-used social media application after Facebook, YouTube and WhatsApp.
The app is available on iOS, Android and on desktop.
