From my point of view, 2021, which has only a few months left to run, has been a fabulous year in terms of cinema. This year I have been able to enjoy excellent proposals, both from new directors and from filmmakers with a track record, but who have taken risks, developing original, strange and different proposals. This leads me to continue believing in cinema as a way to explore intimate themes that seek to unravel and explain the complexity of our existence. Of course, most of these risky productions have been screened at the Cannes and Sitges film festivals. Many have yet to be released and I'm looking forward to them. Last night I had the opportunity to see the winner of the recently celebrated Sitges Film Festival, a fascinating debut film for multiple reasons, which I will explain in this review.

Este año he podido disfrutar de excelentes propuestas, tanto de nuevos directores como de cineastas con trayectoria, pero que han arriesgado, desarrollando propuestas originales, extrañas y diferentes. Esto me lleva a seguir creyendo en el cine como una forma de explorar temas íntimos que buscan desentrañar y explicar la complejidad de nuestra existencia. I love that phrase of the extraordinary Cassavetes and I wanted to start this review with that phrase, because this film is a study about our lives, about our behavior as rational human beings, who encounter something that alters their lives, something that is irrational, with no possible logical explanation, but that is accepted, both by the characters and the viewer, in a natural and believable way.
It is the first film of Icelandic filmmaker Valdimar Jóhannsson, achieving his first success by giving credibility to a fantastic story, which easily walks a thin line where everything could go wrong, but this man has meticulously planned this production, starting from an idea and sketches in a notebook for ten years, said by himself in multiple interviews conceived for magazines, newspapers and television programs.
This may be his first film, but looking at his career on IMDB , he is a filmmaker who has been accumulating experience since 2000, camera, lighting, screenwriter, electrical department, etc., from children's series like Lazy Town to working on productions by Clint Eastwood, Ridley Scott and films of successful sagas, such as Star Wars or Fast and Furious. In many of them, working in the area of special effects, which has helped him to perfect that art and achieve in Lamb an impeccable work in that aspect, very important for us to believe all the fantastic element present in the film.
Valdimar is enjoying its moment of glory, the film received an Un Certain Regard at the last Cannes Film Festival and at the Sitges Film Festival it was the big winner, receiving the award for Best Film and in addition, its leading actress, Noomi Rapace, won the award for Best Actress, and I totally agree with that decision, because she does a fantastic job. I already have the filmmaker in my list of great promises, I hope this is just the beginning of a great trajectory as a director, I like the guts he had to develop this fantastic and disturbing story. These are the filmmakers we need, people who take risks to tell the stories they want to tell, who explore the deepest part of the human being.
What will be your next project? I have no idea, he hasn't said if he has anything in mind. At the moment it looks like he will continue to be involved in various projects on location in Iceland, working on special effects and other areas of the production. When Lamb finishes his distribution and promotion phase, he will have enough time to plan his new film, I will be keeping a close eye on him, he is a director to keep an eye on.

Es la primera película del cineasta islandés Valdimar Jóhannsson, logrando su primer éxito dando credibilidad a una historia fantástica, que fácilmente camina por una delgada línea en la que todo podría salir mal, pero este hombre ha planificado minuciosamente esta producción, partiendo de una idea y bocetos en un cuaderno durante diez años, dicho por él mismo en múltiples entrevistas concebidas para revistas, periódicos y programas de televisión.
Puede que esta sea su primera película, pero al repasar su trayectoria en IMDB, es un cineasta que va acumulando experiencia desde el año 2000, cámara, iluminación, guionista, departamento eléctrico, etc, desde series infantiles como Lazy Town hasta llegar a trabajar en producciones de Clint Eastwood, Ridley Scott y películas de sagas de éxito, como Star Wars o Fast and Furious. En muchas de ellas, trabajando en el área de efectos especiales, lo que le ha ayudado a perfeccionar ese arte y lograr en Lamb un trabajo impecable en esa aspecto, muy importante para que nos creamos todo el elemento fantástico presente en la película.
Valdimar está disfrutando de su momento de gloria, la película recibió una Un Certain Regard en el pasado Festival de Cannes y en el Festival de Sitges fue la gran triunfadora, recibiendo el premio a la Mejor Película y además, su actriz protagonista, Noomi Rapace, ganó el premio a la Mejor Actriz, y estoy totalmente de acuerdo con esa decisión, porque hace un trabajo fantástico. Ya tengo al cineasta en mi lista de grandes promesas, espero que esto sea solo el principio de una gran trayectoria como director, me gustan las agallas que tuvo para desarrollar esta fantástica e inquietante historia. Estos son los cineastas que necesitamos, gente que se arriesga a contar las historias que quiere contar, que explora lo más profundo del ser humano.
¿Cuál será su próximo proyecto? No tengo ni idea, no ha dicho si tiene algo en mente. De momento parece que seguirá involucrado en varios proyectos en localizaciones de Islandia, trabajando en los efectos especiales y otras áreas de la producción. What is the plot of Lamb?
Maria and Ignvar are a married couple who have a farm, their daily routine is to work on the farm. They are a couple going through that period when everything is a habit, they notice something sad, they don't have children. Every day they work hard taking care of the lambs and doing all the work necessary to maintain those Icelandic farms, with a constant freezing weather and where it never gets dark. That routine seems to be killing the love that once existed in the marriage, until something unexpected happens, an unbelievable event, which I will not tell in order not to make spoilers. That is what will completely change the life of this couple, who will also receive the visit of Petur, Ignvar's brother, who at first will ask the same question as us, What the hell is going on here? Happiness seems to have come to the marriage, they will not want to get rid of that feeling, but there are dark forces that inhabit these desolate landscapes, which will endanger the stability and even the lives of all. Is it real what we see? Is it a collective madness? Does this abnormal event have an explanation? Will they be happy forever or will it lead to destruction? Who or what is Ada?
¿Cuál es el argumento de Lamb?
María e Ignvar son un matrimonio que tiene una granja, su rutina diaria es trabajar en la granja. Es una pareja que pasa por ese periodo en el que todo es una costumbre, se notan algo triste, no tienen hijos. Cada día trabajan duro cuidando de los corderos y haciendo todo el trabajo necesario para mantener esas granjas islandesas, con un clima helado constante y donde nunca anochece. Esa rutina parece estar matando el amor que alguna vez existió en el matrimonio, hasta que sucede algo inesperado, un hecho increíble, que no contaré para no hacer spoilers. My opinion
When you see this movie, you will necessarily be in one of the following camps: those who will be fascinated by the story and those who will be very bored, because they thought they would find a horror movie with Jump Scare.
A few days ago I explained this in a comment to a post by another user. We are in the 21st century and the horror genre has evolved in many aspects. I'm one of those who think we should stop associating horror directly with fear. Yes, I know that if you search the internet for the concept of the horror genre in literature or film, it will tell you that they are products that generate some kind of fear in the consumer. There are definitely things that change over time and this genre is one of them.
Those looking for classic horror, are going to be disappointed, even if you are looking for extreme horror, gory, etc, more disappointed you are going to be. This is another of those films, which uses elements of fantasy and horror films, to narrate a very intimate drama, that of a married couple, who in the face of their monotony and sadness for the loss, accept the unimaginable, and even absurd for many, as a tangible reality that will bring them the desired happiness.
Every human being reacts differently to loss, in the film it is something that is not told from the beginning, but we sense that it is there. We will have time to discover something of the past of the protagonists. That feeling produced by the loss of a loved one, in this case the children, is what gives coherence to the behavior of the protagonists, who will cling to the only possibility they have to be happy, although there is no logical explanation.
We, as spectators, will exclaim: "What the hell is this? But like Maria and Ignvar, it will be easy to accept the abnormality present in the life of this farming couple. It is the first great success of the filmmaker, to involve us in the fantastic story, with good special effects and that despite being something that disturbs when watching it, at the same time we will feel empathy for Ada and the normality that she brings to the family nucleus.
Mi opinión
Cuando veas esta película, necesariamente estarás en uno de los siguientes bandos: los que quedarán fascinados por la historia y los que se aburrirán mucho, porque pensaron que se encontrarían con una película de terror con Jump Scare.
Hace unos días lo explicaba en un comentario a un post de otro usuario. Estamos en el siglo XXI y el género de terror ha evolucionado en muchos aspectos. Soy de los que piensan que deberíamos dejar de asociar el terror directamente con el miedo. Sí, sé que si buscas en internet el concepto del género de terror en la literatura o el cine, te dirá que son productos que generan algún tipo de miedo en el consumidor. Definitivamente hay cosas que cambian con el tiempo y este género es una de ellas.
Aquellos que busquen el terror clásico, se van a decepcionar, incluso si buscas el terror extremo, sangriento, etc, más decepcionado vas a estar. Esta es otra de esas películas, que utiliza elementos del cine fantástico y de terror, para narrar un drama muy íntimo, el de un matrimonio, que ante su monotonía y tristeza por la pérdida, aceptan lo inimaginable, y hasta absurdo para muchos, como una realidad tangible que les traerá la ansiada felicidad.
Cada ser humano reacciona de forma diferente ante la pérdida, en la película es algo que no se cuenta desde el principio, pero que intuimos que está ahí. Ya tendremos tiempo de descubrir algo del pasado de los protagonistas. Ese sentimiento producido por la pérdida de un ser querido, en este caso los hijos, es lo que da coherencia al comportamiento de los protagonistas, que se aferrarán a la única posibilidad que tienen de ser felices, aunque no haya una explicación lógica.
Nosotros, como espectadores, exclamaremos: "¿Qué demonios es esto? Pero al igual que María e Ignvar, será fácil aceptar la anormalidad presente en la vida de esta pareja de agricultores. Es el primer gran acierto del cineasta, involucrarnos en la historia fantástica, con buenos efectos especiales y que a pesar de ser algo que perturba al verla, al mismo tiempo sentiremos empatía por Ada y la normalidad que aporta al núcleo familiar.
The Silence
The second success of the director and screenwriter is the construction of the story through silence. It is his first film and he takes the risk of using silence, something that requires a mastery and security of the cinematographic language that manages to involve the viewer. This is something that fascinated me about the story, as I have said on other occasions, cinema is moving image and even great works can tell a lot without the need for unnecessary explanatory dialogues.
I'm completely sure that most of the current generation of Tik Tok viewers will be the ones bored with the story. It is a film with many silent scenes, in which we see the day to day life of a farm in Iceland, the routine of a married couple and how they try to be happy.
But they are silences that say a lot, making the acting work more important. Actions, behaviors, reactions, gestures. They say that an image has more power than a thousand words and the film is proof of that. A glance of the protagonist is capable of transmitting the emotion he is living at a given moment. It is one of the powerful tools that cinema has, I am delighted and happy, I hope many others manage to see that beauty and the theme of the film.
Life
I can't resist the charms of films like Lamb . Using fantasy and horror in a daring way, it makes us ask ourselves dilemmas about our lives. What are we? What to do in the face of marital boredom? What to do in the face of loss? To be unhappy all our lives? What to do when the irrational appears in our lives? How do we react? Do we look for an explanation or do we create our own reality? Do we lie to ourselves so as not to let happiness slip away?
Many questions that perhaps we have asked ourselves at some point in our lives, in other more real circumstances, within our environment, without fantastic factors. But that's what cinema is for, to use the different existing genres, to experiment with them and expose on the screen the questions that some people don't want to answer or fabricate a lie, to isolate themselves and create their own sense of happiness.
It was easy for me to identify with Maria, the protagonist of the story, and also with her husband. Do you want to be happy? I think so, that's what we all want, to be happy in the life we have been given. It is the essential search in every human being, some manage to find it, others do not. It is sad, but the history of mankind is full of tragedies and many of us leave this world without having found full happiness. Are you happy? Answer yourself that question, but be honest.
El Silencio
El segundo acierto del director y guionista es la construcción de la historia a través del silencio. Es su primera película y se arriesga a utilizar el silencio, algo que requiere un dominio y una seguridad del lenguaje cinematográfico que consigue implicar al espectador. Esto es algo que me fascinó de la historia, como ya he dicho en otras ocasiones, el cine es imagen en movimiento e incluso las grandes obras pueden contar mucho sin necesidad de diálogos explicativos innecesarios.
Estoy completamente seguro de que la mayoría de los espectadores de la actual generación de Tik Tok serán los que se aburran con la historia. Es una película con muchas escenas silenciosas, en las que vemos el día a día de una granja en Islandia, la rutina de un matrimonio y cómo intentan ser felices.
Pero son silencios que dicen mucho, haciendo que el trabajo actoral sea más importante. Acciones, comportamientos, reacciones, gestos. Dicen que una imagen tiene más poder que mil palabras y la película es una prueba de ello. Una mirada del protagonista es capaz de transmitir la emoción que está viviendo en un momento determinado. Es una de las herramientas poderosas que tiene el cine, estoy encantado y feliz, espero que muchos otros logren ver esa belleza y el tema de la película.
La vida
No puedo resistirme a los encantos de películas como Lamb . Utilizando la fantasía y el terror de forma atrevida, nos hace plantearnos dilemas sobre nuestra vida. ¿Qué somos? ¿Qué hacer ante el hastío matrimonial? ¿Qué hacer ante la pérdida? ¿Ser infelices toda la vida? ¿Qué hacer cuando lo irracional aparece en nuestras vidas? ¿Cómo reaccionamos? ¿Buscamos una explicación o creamos nuestra propia realidad? ¿Nos mentimos a nosotros mismos para no dejar escapar la felicidad?
Muchas preguntas que quizás nos hemos hecho en algún momento de nuestra vida, en otras circunstancias más reales, dentro de nuestro entorno, sin factores fantásticos. Pero para eso está el cine, para utilizar los distintos géneros existentes, para experimentar con ellos y exponer en la pantalla las preguntas que algunos no quieren responder o fabricar una mentira, para aislarse y crear su propia sensación de felicidad.
Me resultó fácil identificarme con María, la protagonista de la historia, y también con su marido. ¿Quieres ser feliz? Creo que sí, es lo que todos queremos, ser felices en la vida que nos ha tocado. Es la búsqueda esencial en todo ser humano, algunos logran encontrarla, otros no. Es triste, pero la historia de la humanidad está llena de tragedias y muchos nos vamos de este mundo sin haber encontrado la felicidad plena. ¿Es usted feliz? Contéstate a ti mismo esa pregunta, pero sé sincero.
Atmosphere
The third achievement of the director, this time with the help of cinematographer Eli Arenson, is the construction of atmosphere. From the beginning of the film, we know that there is something wrong with that place, that cold, rainy, and where the light is constant, hides something disturbing, something that we do not see, but we will feel its constant threat, throughout the film.
Of course, those beautiful desolate landscapes of Iceland are attractive and perfect for this kind of stories. They offer beauty, while at the same time they can instill a certain intyrigue, about what can exist in those remote, lonely places. They are landscapes that exert a hypnotic power on the viewer and help to reinforce the fantastic part of the film, so many experts have labeled the film as folk horror, although it has characteristics of that subgenre, I think it lacks the religious element, which for me is crucial that it exists, to include it within that subgenre. But I'm just an unknown pseudo film critic, I don't think my opinion on the matter has much influence.
Atmósfera
El tercer logro del director, esta vez con la ayuda del director de fotografía Eli Arenson, es la construcción de la atmósfera. Desde el principio de la película, sabemos que hay algo que no funciona en ese lugar, que frío, lluvioso, y donde la luz es constante, esconde algo inquietante, algo que no vemos, pero que sentiremos su constante amenaza, a lo largo de la película.
Por supuesto, esos hermosos paisajes desolados de Islandia son atractivos y perfectos para este tipo de historias. Ofrecen belleza, a la vez que pueden infundir cierta intyriga, sobre lo que puede existir en esos lugares remotos, tan solitarios. Son paisajes que ejercen un poder hipnótico en el espectador y ayudan a reforzar la parte fantástica de la película, por lo que muchos expertos han catalogado la película de folk horror, aunque tiene características de ese subgénero, creo que le falta el elemento religioso, que para mí es crucial que exista, para incluirla dentro de ese subgénero. Pero solo soy un pseudo crítico de cine desconocido, no creo que mi opinión al respecto tenga mucha influencia.

Actress Noomi Rapace plays Maria, the woman who together with her husband, have the responsibility of working on the farm, the surprising fact that will give a twist to their lives, will assume it with more normality, something that is understood as the story progresses and we discover things from the past. She is a strong woman determined to protect her new normal. The actress is phenomenal and I agree with her award for Best Actress at the Sitges Film Festival. She deserves it. The last minutes of her performance are poetic.
She is a famous actress and the director was lucky that she accepted the challenge of participating in this film, something that speaks very well of this actress, willing to participate in risky projects. It is true that sometimes we see her in productions that are a bit bad, but she is an excellent actress and in Lamb she is the one who carries the rhythm.
Actor Hilmir Snær Guðnason plays Ingvar, Maria's husband. At first he will have doubts, but his love for his wife and the same feeling they share will make him give in to the abnormality. The actor is believable in his role, perhaps unknown to most viewers, but he is an actor with a long career and very famous in Iceland.
Björn Hlynur Haraldsson is the third actor in the cast, he plays Petur, who will be incredulous at what his eyes see, he is the rational part of it all, but will eventually be convinced by the couple to accept Ada. His presence at the farm will also trigger other family problems. He is another Icelandic actor, famous in his country, with many film and TV productions, but unknown in the rest of the world.
La actriz Noomi Rapace interpreta a María, la mujer que junto a su marido, tienen la responsabilidad de trabajar en la granja, el sorprendente hecho que dará un giro a sus vidas, lo asumirá con más normalidad, algo que se va comprendiendo a medida que avanza la historia y descubrimos cosas del pasado. Lamb is a story that can be categorized as a modern fable, with elements of horror, fantasy and drama that explores human behavior and their reaction to tragedy and opportunities that can completely change their lives from sadness and boredom to happiness. For me it is really a deep drama, all the fantastic and horror resources it may have, serve as metaphors about more important issues in life.
Another film that I am going to include in my list of the best and interesting films of the year. It will divide audiences, of that I'm sure, but I still recommend it to everyone. Lamb es una historia que puede catalogarse como una fábula moderna, con elementos de terror, fantasía y drama que explora el comportamiento humano y su reacción ante la tragedia y las oportunidades que pueden cambiar completamente sus vidas, haciéndolas pasar de la tristeza y el aburrimiento a la felicidad. Para mí es realmente un drama profundo, todos los recursos fantásticos y de terror que pueda tener, sirven como metáforas sobre temas más importantes de la vida.
Otra película que voy a incluir en mi lista de las mejores e interesantes películas del año. Dividirá al público, de eso estoy seguro, pero igual la recomiendo a todos.
