Hoy traemos un post por demás de interesante oportuno, ya que sirve de marco histórico a propósito de las controversiales Olimpiadas de Tokio que en este momento pandémico se llevan a cabo , en esta oportunidad recordaremos un momento olímpico que nos haya marcado, para mi no ha sido difícil escoger al protagonista de esta historia, por lo que en las líneas que siguen les hablaré de Rafael Vidal , un joven 🏊♂️ nadador que representó a mi país, Venezuela en los Juegos Olímpicos de Los Ángeles 1984 en en la categoría de 200 metros mariposa .

Recuerdo gratamente el momento cuando Rafael Vidal ganó la medalla de bronce 🥉 en los Juegos Olímpicos de los Ángeles 1984, para el momento yo tenia 22 años de edad y tenia uno de haberme graduado en la universidad, y en Venezuela la crisis económica ya despuntaba, teníamos convertibilidad de la moneda, es decir 1 USD$ = 7,50 bolívares y los precios de la gasolina eran Bs. 1,20 la de alto octanaje y 0,80 la regular, el país continuaba con la hegemonía de la belleza de la mujer venezolana en los certámenes internacionales, ese año de 1984 era coronada como Miss Mundo, la venezolana: Astrid Carolina Herrera, para mi 1984 es un año que no olvidaré en lo deportivo, ese año nuestro grande liga Antonio Armas ⚾ es nombrado atleta del año, en la olimpiadas Venezuela obtiene 3 medallas de bronce, 2 de ellas en boxeo con los púgiles 🥊: Marcelino Bolívar y Omar Catarí , ya mi país tenia pantalones largos en boxeo, era una naciente potencia en ese deporte, pero en cuanto a la hazaña lograda por Rafael Vidal en aquellas Olimpíadas para mi fue lo más grande, ya que seria el 1er nadador 🏊♂️ venezolano en obtener una medalla olímpica.

Al igual que mi padre, siempre he seguido en detalle la carrera deportiva de los atletas venezolanos en los escenarios internacionales en cualquier modalidad deportiva donde estos participen, recuerdo que el 4 de agosto de 1984 era sábado, y en Venezuela había mucha expectación por la actuación que tendría el tritón venezolano, quien se había clasificado para la final de los 200 metros en la categoría de mariposa, a pesar del palmarés internacional que pesaba sobre sus hombros no figuraba como favorito en la final : 1980 medalla de oro y plata en el XXV Campeonato Suramericano abierto de Natación en Buenos Aires, 1981 campeonato Suramericano de natación en Medellín donde gana 2 medallas de oro, Campeonato De Natación Centroamericano en México 2 medallas de oro, en los IX Juegos Bolivarianos celebrados en Barquisimeto, Venezuela, Rafael Vidal contribuye con sus victorias para que el equipo de natación venezolano arrasara con 6 medallas de oro y 2 de plata , 1982 en los XIV Juegos Centroamericanos de La Habana, Cuba, obtiene 6 medallas de oro, 1983 en los IX Juegos Panamericanos de Caracas, Venezuela, el equipo de natación encabezado por Vidal obtiene 5 medallas de bronce, esta participación en los Panamericanos le dio la oportunidad de participar en 1984 en los juegos olímpicos de Los Ángeles, donde competirá en los 100 meros y 200 metros estilo mariposa, obteniendo el 4to lugar en los 100 metros el 30/07/1984 y logrando la medalla de bronce en los 200 metros el 04/08/1984 .

La final de los 200 metros estilo mariposa recuerdo que paralizó a Venezuela ese día, todos estábamos ansiosos frente a la televisión esperando escuchar el nombre de mi país y por supuesto el del tiburón venezolano, Rafael Vidal, la competencia tendría 8 nadadores para disputarse las 3 medallas olímpicas, estos eran : John Sieben (Australia), Michael Gross (Alemania), Rafael Vidal (Venezuela), Pablo Morales (USA) quien era el gran favorito por ser local, Anthony Mosse (Nueva Zelanda), Thomas Ponting (Canadá), Peter Ward (Canadá) y Patrick Kennedy (USA) , la partida fue bastante pareja, por el carril 5 estaba el venezolano, quien en los primeros 50 metros se mantenía entre los 3 primeros lugares, en algunas oportunidades lograba el 2 puesto pero en general a lo largo de la competencia se mantuvo de 3ero, no cedía ese preciado lugar y no daba tregua al favorito de la prueba Pablo Morales quien hasta el ultimo momento le pisaba los talones y amenazaba con pasarlo, en mi opinión muy personal creo que la victoria de nuestro compatriota estuvo en la resistencia, condiciones físicas excepcionales y en las excelentes vueltas que ejecuto a la perfección, esta técnica de vuelta de campana la perfeccionó Vidal desde temprana edad gracias a sus entrenadores: Andrés Alvarado y Alfonso Victoria, recuerdo con mucha alegría las palabras de mi padre: Muchachos, Vidal metió en el podio a Venezuela, tenemos medalla de bronce para rato, la verdad fue un momento de muchísima alegría, el cual hasta hoy en que escribo este post y viendo el video se me salen las lagrimas por aquel sublime momento olímpico que viví en mi adolescencia en compañía de mi padre y hermanos.
