Gambling - Giving False Hope to the Less Financially Educated

Freddie Thorne had walked up to Thomas Shelby at the bar, ordered a glass of beer, and paid with one of Thomas's coins. The effrontery! I thought the first time I saw that scene. But as I continued to watch further I realized Freddie Thorne was a communist and he had trouble running down his blood.

He was the one person who consistently spoke against the union and gathered a group of like-minded individuals, shouted at the top of their voices about the bad side of the government, then went on and still labor in vain. The fact that he could pay for his drink with Thomas's money meant he had no fear whatsoever for anyone not even the Peaky Blinders...

If you haven't seen the movie, which I'd recommend, even though I am just starting, you should. It seems the Peaky Blinders run the whole town, I am seeing glimpses of war times hovering over their heads. The fact is none of them who returned from defending the country in France is able to sleep well and live without the traumatic experiences they had during the war

Thomas and his family translated theirs into building and running businesses which translated into running the town. Freddie Thorne translated his to being a communist, staging riots and demonstrations. The rest of the warriors find themselves in between. Like Danny who breaks things in fear that he is still in the artillery awaiting dead. Each person had their way of dealing with the trauma.

This post isn't about analyzing how they all fought the demons that manifested in them after they returned from France. Nope, I would need a lot of psychological experience to do that because as seen on screen, war does a lot of things to people even those who do not have to be on the battlefield. We have read some of the stories of the heroes and those who lost their lives. We have also read stories of those who were left behind to hold the homes together until the soldiers returned.

However, this post is about the conversation that transpired between Thomas and Freddie Thorne. While sipping his beer, he told Thomas about a robbery. The kind of robbery that surpasses mere trying to survive on the street, this one had to reach those higher up.

And someone had been sent to seek the thief out, and the two suspects were Thomas and himself. Thomas neither denied nor pretended to be ill-informed. He was in the know but he did not let his guard down. Instead, their conversation found a way to help Thomas leave Freddie Thorne with these words

Perhaps it's a list of men who give false hopes to the poor. Peaky Blinders - British Drama Series - 2013–2022

Freddie had asked how a communist and a book marker ended up side by side on the same list and Thomas gave him that answer. Yes, Thomas and his family are in the business of betting on horses and he has his way of making the poor bet on a particular horse. Through those tactics, these people are encouraged to even give up their savings in the hopes of hitting the jackpot.

I will try not to judge or point fingers, after all, Morgan Housel had reminded us that poor people place bets frequently because they are paying for a dream. And they will often tell the rich who don't do it often or even kick against it that they wouldn't understand because the rich are already living the dream. Buying a lottery ticket according to them is the one chance they have to hold onto this tangible dream.

So Thomas Shelby outrightly accepts that he gives the poor a chance to pay for their dreams. Even though it might be false hopes, they are happy to give their money away in hopes that one day they will be right. Again, Morgan Housel said, sometimes we could be wrong about something and still make a fortune. I know this doesn't have anything to do with gambling but you must remember that every time we buy a certain stock or invest in any asset class, luck and risk follow that decision side by side. If it turns out right, some may call that luck but if doesn't you outrightly risked your money and you failed.

If you check closely gambling is done by people who might struggle to make a living. They keep blowing their safety net by betting on something with a one-in-a-million chance of making a fortune. In the end, you can't judge, no one is crazy, everyone makes these financial decisions based on the way they think the world works not necessarily because of a spreadsheet. Their ego, pride, the marketing punchline they see, and the different incentives are all mixed together when they are making financial decisions. The truth is it doesn't matter if it's gambling or basically putting money into a certain asset class, we all see money differently and our decisions will always be backed by our personal theories.
