Week through Adrian's Lenses (17-23 February 2024)

Week Adrian Lenses.jpg

This is the #59th edition of the "Week through Adrian's Lenses" weekly Hive and crypto news roundup.

Let's see what we have for this week.

Week on Hive

Strangely, I only tracked 24 posts for this week's report, which is much lower than the average. 12 Hive news made it to this week's edition of the "Week on Hive" roundup.

But this low flux of news comes at the right time, since I just had a minor surgery this morning (still, over 2 hours), and could use a lighter report.

In the Spotlight

Next Week Is the Snapshot for Arcade Colony Fork Rewards

According to the Arcade Colony whitepaper, next week, on February 26th at noon eastern, will be the snapshot that will determine if you receive fork rewards or not. Read the conditions well, especially if you have GLX and GLUSD tokens spread between staked, liquid, and liquidity pools, and you don't make the minimum thresholds for receiving the rewards, but you would if you would put them in one place, or with a minor boost. If that's the case, maybe you shouldn't leave it for the last minute, especially if you're the kind that forgets things and is not prepared to act when the time comes.

After the fork rewards, a 5-year daily airdrop will follow that takes into account our stakes in GLX (min. 10k) and SPS (min. 5k), distributed evenly between the holders of the two tokens. The airdrop will also be on an exponential curve, meaning it will start low and increase in time. Maybe that way it will avoid over-rewarding airdrop hunters (and dumpers), and reward more long-term holders in the Splinterlands ecosystem.

Marketing / Awareness / Branding

Hive Guide for Wrestling Fans

The WOO team created a pretty extensive Hive guide that is targeted at wrestling fans. Not a bad idea at all, especially since they start with a language that might attract them and talk about the WOO partners, former wrestling stars that should be well-known in that entertainment domain.

New Marketing Proposal: Fund Research Instead of Advertising

@ura-soul and @ashleymosaic are the two people behind the @strategizer DHF proposal. It's a pretty long one, but unlike previous marketing proposals that are oriented toward attracting new users through advertising or other means, this proposal is focused on market research, user experience analysis, SEO, and more to provide actionable insights for stakeholders and applications.

VIBES Contest Week 1 Went On...

... and is now at its conclusion, or at least close to it. The two judges will start assigning scores on various categories, which will count in different measures to the final score. Here are the details.

Governance / Development / Dapps

INLEO Added Various Requested / Useful Features

Inleo regularly added new smaller (and not so small) features and tools recently.

I haven't seen a post describing them, but you can see them if you check out @khaleelkazi threads account.

One thing that I found very important was the addition of pools to long-form posts. This may be from the week before, I'm not sure. But I've seen people start to use them, and they are a significant addition. Previously, they were only available on threads.

Then, I've seen the Dashboard was updated so that it works in its entirety (but currently it is deactivated - probably some bug fixes).

Something that may be a small thing but helps make the front end better in certain situations (like for curating), is the addition of a contextual menu for articles, which allows to open a post in a new tab, for example. A small thing, yet it was missing until recently.

I also noticed on the long-form interface the possibility of pasting Excel ranges (groups of cells) directly as markdown tables (or so I understand the description, haven't used it yet).

CTT Podcast - Different Views on the 20% APR on HBD

In episode 101 of CTT, @edicted was invited. There were different topics approached, but on the HBD one, he supported the 20% APR on HBD, while Matt and Dan think the 3-day lockup for 20% doesn't make sense and doesn't help the spending and distribution of HBD. They think a tiered lockup with second-layer bonds makes more sense.

Games

Holozing - Last Chance to Set Your Referrer

@acidyo reminded us to set our referrer if we joined without one. This option will no longer be available once the starter sale begins. You can read more about it here.

Exode Just Added Factions

@elindos created an update for Exode, presenting the new Factions gameplay that was integrated into the game.

Meetings / Events / Communities

CBRS Philanthropy Chat With @minigunner

I didn't have the chance to listen to the recording of @ph1102's second interview, this time with @minigunner from @coldbeetrootsoup (and not only). I'm going on Zoltan's hand with the title. By reading through the post, I realized I already had the news about "Hive-Hub" prepared for this roundup. I'll just add it below in the "Philanthropy" section.

We know all the Speakers for the Hive Meetup in Hamburg

After presenting the first series of speakers to the meetup in Hamburg from 20-21 April 2024 in mid-November, now we know the second part of the list.

Hive Cuba about Their Meeting

I thought Hive Cuba was meeting among the books (according to the title of the fair), but it seems to be more among the ruins/old buildings. Regardless, a meeting is a meeting, and there are many people around to see the Hive logo and maybe get curious. See some nice pictures here.

Hive Peru Community Presents Itself

Another South American community has risen, from Peru. Check out their introduction post, and welcome them.

Students Debating About Hive...

I don't understand much (since it's Spanish), but this HIVEED class seems to have stirred quite a debate.

Philanthropy

Creating a Hive Hub in a School in Venezuela

This project aims to introduce internet access and then create a Hive Hub in a high school in Venezuela. Students will have a blockchain-focused educational space where they will be able to access Hive dapps and express themselves. Several Venezuelan communities collaborate on this project. You can also learn more about it from the interview taken by Zoltan which I linked in the above section.

Week in the Crypto World

Reddit Holds Some Bitcoin and Ether

In their IPO process, Reddit disclosed in a SEC filing that it holds "immaterial" amounts of BTC and ETH. It is one of the few well-known companies not involved in the crypto space to have purchased directly cryptocurrencies, alongside MicroStrategy and Tesla. You can read more about it here.

Nigerians Temporarily Lost Access to Major CEXes Due to a Ban

Apparently, their government is pissed because the naira keeps devaluating and blames crypto exchanges for harming the national currency (the article describes a possible connection between limitations imposed to p2p trading on Binance, including on USDT/NGN, and dropping of naira to record lows). The ban was either lifted soon after or other ways were found because it seems access to all major crypto exchanges is restored for Nigerians.

This is an interesting development because not too long ago I cited a piece of news regarding how open is the Nigerian government to new tech, and their programs for it. At the same time, Nigeria is one of the countries with high crypto adoption and a large population as well.

We are probably used to aggressive moves on crypto from governments. When they feel threatened (or when they have an ulterior motive), they will fight back.
