Peter didn’t lack for confidence, but this girl made him shuffle on the spot, anxious to make a good impression. Alex stuck the tip of his face out from behind the locker door, peering to see if the girl was still there.

“Oh god,” he mumbled, “she’s heading straight for us”.
A moment later, and the girl was stood before them both. Peter had his hands shoved awkwardly in his pockets, while only Alex’s legs were visible behind his locker.
“Hello” she said in a sweet voice, “I’m Aurora”

Neither boy spoke, but the girl didn’t seem perturbed. Her golden hair was split into two braids tied with white ribbon, complimenting a pair of beautiful doe like brown eyes. Wearing tight fitting blue jeans and a white crop top that exposed her stomach, Aurora would make most boys feel intimidated while in her presence.

Creeping out from behind his locker door, Alex tried to speak and couldn’t, worried he might say something stupid. It was obvious that Peter was thinking the same thing. His heart felt ready to burst from his chest when her eyes flickered from Peter to him. ‘Why is a girl like her talking to boys like us?’ he thought furiously, sure she must have mistaken them for cool kids or something.

“I’m Peter,” announced the black-haired boy suddenly, hands now out of his pockets and one arm rested on Alex’s shoulder, “it’s nice to meet you”.
When Alex failed to follow his friends lead, Peter gave him a not to subtle tap on the shoulder. Aurora smiled, not menacingly, for she could tell that Alex was uncomfortable, but reassuringly.

“I’m Ale… Alex,” he stammered at last, as a second bell rang to signal that there was five minutes before school started.
“Well, it’s nice to meet you both,” her calm demeanour suggested she was not at all intimidated by Alex or Peter. “Do you know where the principle’s office is?”.

This time, Alex tried to answer her question; her smile had made him confident, but all that came out of his mouth was incomprehensible noise.
Peter took the opportunity to jump in, “yes I do; it’s just down the end of this hallway, second door on your right”.
Aurora smiled again, highlighting her wonderful cheekbones. The students surrounding them were beginning to disperse, but that smile held Alex and Peter rooted to the spot.

“Are you new here?” Peter asked, trying to keep the conversation going, but not knowing what to say.
“Is it that obvious?” she replied jokingly, drawing a small chuckle from Peter. Alex remained tongue tied, too embarrassed by his last attempt at speech to try joining the conversation again. Aurora had obviously noticed.
“Your friend Alex, is he ok?”.

Let our children not grow up in a terrible world. Together we can make it better. It is our destiny to
suffer from the past, to long for the future, but to forget the present.
