The Rum Diary - Emulating the Simpsons with predictions [ESP - ENG]

The Rum Diary

The Rum Diary - emulating the Simpsons with predictions

Greetings dear friends of Hive, I wasn't planning to write about movies today, because I recently posted a review, but due to the recent events, I decided to do so, as I have the movie fresh in my mind, since I have the movie fresh in my mind.

I read on twitter about the trial of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard and that led me to know the movie where they met, and that made me very curious and coincidentally I had seen it promoted on my streaming channel a day before knowing this detail. So I didn't think twice and I tucked myself in well and set out to enjoy the movie where that toxic relationship began. And I discovered some amazing things.

This movie is based on the book by Hunter S. Thompson (Johnny Deep starred in another adaptation by the same author) and boy, did I find a picture of them together (here you can see it). This movie is set in the 1960s and I must emphasize how well done the production design is.

Diario de un seductor

Filmaffinity synopsis:

Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) is an American writer who has started working as an editor for a Caribbean newspaper. His new environment, little by little, begins to go sour. Love, envy, jealousy and lots of alcohol are the main ingredients of the story.

It has very good performances and has many actors who offer epic performances, in my streaming service it is classified as a comedy, and although it does have hilarious moments, the truth is that I consider that it cannot be classified as such, because the film has much more than those funny situations. I think it is because it is set in Puerto Rico, and come on, the magical realism flows naturally throughout the film, and that makes the moments that might seem bizarre, violent or distressing, come to be perceived as funny by the simple fact of the performance of the actors and secondly by how illogical some of the situations may seem, but that in the Caribbean we can understand that it is possible. It also happens that the situations seem to be taken to the extreme.

I thought Johnny Deep's performance was brilliant, not only for offering that profile of a failed but remarkably intelligent writer, he is able to project that but of a misunderstood artist who has not been able to find his own voice. Amber Heard plays the role of herself, which is why she looks so natural: a beautiful woman behind a rich husband, but who doesn't hesitate for a moment to seduce Johnny's handsome one. Giovanni Ribisi also offers a remarkable performance, he is a great actor, and the film knows how to manage his appearances very well, that prevents him from tiring his protagonism and that on the contrary we wish to see him more often.

The film deals with very current issues, situations that continue to afflict contemporary society. In Diary of a Seducer they refer to the corporations that break the ecological balance of areas that are little protected in third world countries which they call canallas, as well as the wide social gap in the world, and exemplifies it very well by showing that not only Latinos, in this case specifically Puerto Ricans, are not much different from Americans, who do not have a stable capital to live with dignity. Let's see an example of this with the following sentence from the movie:

-- Kemp: So many hotels that you can't see the sea.
-- Lotterman: You can see the sea by checking into hotels.
-- Kemp: Pay to see the sea?
-- Lotterman: What's up with that? You're paying to be in the dream?

I was also struck by how predictive she turned out to be, when near the beginning, at the moment Johnny and Amber's characters meet and he is struck by her beauty and utters the following sentence:

So fine I was before I met her.

I found the phrase funny and even accurate, if we take into account how that relationship turned out. They even have a legal dispute that is currently trending on twitter and other social networks.

It is an irreverent film from the mastermind of an acclaimed writer who already has several film adaptations to his credit, and that all seem to refer to the same character (even Johnny Deep stars in two of them) which makes me think that his books are autobiographical.

This film is a gem that should be classified as "cult", the actors give us memorable performances and the script is very well written. The actors give us memorable performances and the script is very well written. It also takes us on a tour of Puerto Rico, where we can enjoy beautiful landscapes as well as the depressed areas of the island, it is loaded with a strong social criticism that makes you feel empathy. In short, I find it highly recommended.
