Today is two months since Russian troops had rolled into Ukraine. No, this was not the start of war of aggression - it started in 2014 - but it was a start of a drastic aggressive phase of that war which according to both the Western intelligence's expectation and Russian plans was expected to end up with the fall of Ukraine within days. So much so that RIA Novosti, a government-owned media outlet and effectively a Kremlin's mouthpiece, had for a short time published a piece on 26 February, two days into the offensive, that was effectively an announcement of a victory that was a compensation for what was announced as a compensation for the alleged great injustice of the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. That makes it quite clear that this new assault on Ukraine was envisioned as part of an imperial project aimed at restoration of the Soviet Union, or Russian Empire of which it was an instance.

Well, clearly things did not go to plan. Professionalism and bravery of the defenders of Ukraine and massive mobilization of the bulk of the society in that country has effectively thwarted Russian plans. And while it is still not clear how this war is going to end it is clear that relative to its original ambitions Russia has suffered a crushing defeat and, hopefully, so have all parties worldwide eyeing "hard power" of the military as an option for territorial and economical expansion. And, tragic as war is, this is clearly positive news that has come out of this immensely destructive and horrible experience.
