Mealy Redpoll

This morning the thermometer showed -34 degrees.
I had to go to the pet store for some working moments and I was a little worried that the car would not start. But everything went perfectly.

It's a sunny day, so it's nice to sit by the window and watch the birds frolic at the bird feeder.
Today my hero is a small bird - Mealy redpoll.

The Mealy redpoll, or simply redpoll (Latin: Acanthis flammea) — is a species of song passerine bird in the finch family (Fringillidae)

A very small bird, about the size of a finch. Body length 12-15 cm, wing — 6.9-8.5 cm, wingspan 19-23 cm; weight 10-15 g Male brownish-gray above, varies to light gray. The crown is red, the neck and back are whitish, with more or less broad, not sharply defined grayish-brown spots, narrowing on the lower back and on the upper tail, which has a pinkish tinge. The tail feathers, as well as the large wing coverts, are dark brown with whitish edges. The throat, breast and goiter are white with a pinkish-red tinge, the lower part of the breast and belly are white. There is a dark brown or black spot on the throat. There's a red spot on his forehead. In the spring, after the tops of the feathers are exposed, the red color of the cap, goiter and chest becomes more vivid, some have a thick carmine-red color. Females and young have only a red cap, and on the rest of the body, the red color is replaced by white.

I noticed that these birds appear at the feeders at the end of February. This is an interesting fact for me. In December and January, there are only tits at the feeder.

They prefer to collect food under the feeder, from a pile of husks.
maybe the chickadees and greenfinches do not let these redpolls to the bird feeder, or maybe it is easier for them to find food below.

In poor light, these gray birds become completely invisible among the branches.
Mother Nature took good care of the disguise of these birds.

The appearance of these birds indicates that spring is approaching us.
That's just the frost says the opposite - until spring is not yet close.
