Maesa Elephant Camp - Chiang Mai Thailand.

Last week I visited Chiang Mai City in the north of Thailand for two reasons work related and to catch up with some old colleague friends of mine. The week had turned out with good results work wise which allowed us to have the weekend free I had told myself if ever visiting Chiang Mai City again I wanted to visit the Maesa Elephant Camp it's the largest elephant camp in Chiang Mai sits in Maesa Valley with the Maesa river running through the camp in amonsgt the lush green tropical jungle of Thailand and less the a hour's drive from Chiang Mai City. There were 10 of us in total that wanted to make a day of this so we booked a Mini Van from a travel agency that one of my friends knew which ended up costing us $5 US per/person to get us all to the camp a great deal I thought.

Maesa Elephant Camp has a big family of elephants living side by side the camp has been around since 1976, how this camp came to be was when these gentle giants were employed in the logging industry even though it was tough work and abuse they got feed well but when the heavy machinery took over there jobs they were left with there manouts roaming the streets begging for food but today they are well feed and taken care of at the Maesa Elephant Camp.

In what I saw in a write up that their were many comments on the concern over the mistreatment of these gentle gaints. In our experience the Maesa Elephant Camp it's a rescue centre providing food, shelter, a large natural reserve, and training for many of the elephants no longer wanted on the farms. We observed well fed, and cared for animals. Does training of elephants really differ from our training and riding of horses? They are very clever, and some had been trained to play soccer, basketball, and even paint with their trunks. There are a variety of activities you can engage in to interact directly with the elephants including riding in a large basket.

Overall, it was really a fantastic experience and this camp has been recognized by the New York Times as one that makes an effort to support humane care and treatment of elephants. The interactive experiences were memorable and fantastic I could see that these gentle gaints and there babies were having extreme fun and loved the human attention especially the little baby ones.
