At the height of the First World War in April 1917 in northern France, two young British soldiers, Schofield and Blake, are given a mission to hand-deliver a message to the 2nd Battalion of the https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zin8mrCBkLkasjuhCCoreKayJk-XKwKKKE8IzjqUFdA Devonshire Regiment, calling off their planned attack on the German forces. The Germans have feigned retreat to the Hindenburg Line and are prepared to ambush the battalion of 1,600 men, Blake's brother Joseph among them.
Schofield and Blake cross no man's land and reach the original German front, finding the trenches abandoned. The trenches turn out to be booby-trapped and the ensuing explosion almost kills Schofield; https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sGDeYEax44sebFPcYj5OJFztVkHw_KoeWBrWcfK4zw4 he survives thanks to Blake, who digs him out of the debris and leads him out of the collapsing bunkers.
The two arrive at an abandoned farmhouse, where they witness a dogfight nearby. A German plane plunges into the farm, and Schofield and Blake attempt to save the downed pilot. Shortly afterwards, https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1V6lk8O1qKZ9zP9f1N6vOpxg9v-xHYB9TZ6pnR5GUlek however, the pilot ends up stabbing Blake - fatally wounding him. Schofield kills the pilot and comforts Blake as he dies, before proceeding with the mission alone. He is picked up by a passing British platoon and dropped off near the bombed-out village of Écoust-Saint-Mein.
At Écoust, Schofield is attacked by a German sniper. He tracks down and kills the sniper, but gets knocked out by a ricocheting bullet in the process. He regains consciousness at night and stumbles into the https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Xd8VRnZCNoVmzU2OcYRR436-MfCQr-guj2t6RTtnDMQ hiding place of a French woman and an infant, for whom he leaves milk from the farm and some of his own supplies. Continuing his mission, Schofield kills a German soldier and escapes across the river.
Schofield reaches the 2nd Battalion in the morning only to find that the attack has already begun, and that Blake's brother is https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1x_OCqkH_qwESyN7q5OHECyeMo9pKLDiuTXUVMQy87-I among the first wave to go over the top. He sprints across the battlefield to reach the commander of the battalion, Colonel Mackenzie, and the attack is called off. Schofield then https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KoKc0j6Nmk8v2INiF1NbriivhWoigHrBhqCZcHAA3z4 locates Joseph - who is unhurt - and delivers the news of Blake's death. Joseph is saddened by the news, but thanks Schofield for his efforts. Schofield then walks away and sits by a tree, finally able to rest after completing his mission, whilst also revealing he has a young daughter and wife at home awaiting his arrival.
Amblin Partners and New Republic Pictures were https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1EpNhKUa6X9oc9ztwXWtTi6a13J7EfQe1cWgzzo-SZKs announced to have acquired the project in June 2018, which was to be set in World War I, with Sam Mendes directing and writing the screenplay alongside Krysty Wilson-Cairns.[5] The story is based around a "fragment" Alfred Mendes had told to his grandson, Sam Mendes. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1i85Dd6gF_Am_FaoxjQxU97099IZUYxzrlmKKotAcC4A In August 2019, Mendes was quoted as saying "It's the story of a messenger who has a message to carry. And that's all I can say. It lodged with me as a child, this story or this fragment, and obviously I've enlarged it significantly. But it has that at its core."[6]
Tom Holland was reported to be in talks for the film in https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17xmXwHkrVLURSS-B_b3Ge3grBWSEtoVWgBaVdruUK2o September 2018 though ultimately did not get involved,[7] and in October, Roger Deakins was reported to be reuniting with Mendes to serve as cinematographer on the https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19xw86HHziL8LvZWSm9VBNAKJrvl37TBMqDtwfKbpuhg film.[8] George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman entered negotiations to star in the film that same month.[9] Thomas Newman was hired to compose the score for the film in March 2019.[10] That same month, Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Richard Madden, Andrew Scott, Daniel Mays, Adrian Scarborough, Jamie Parker, Nabhaan Rizwan, and Claire Duburcq joined the cast of the film.[11]
