Vote wisely

The upcoming elections in India are a hot topic right now and the major political parties have started their respective campaigns.

I am not a fan of politicians. Period. Be it any party, the politicians never do much good for the people who vote for them. The ones in my state are the best examples. That being said, there have been a lot of changes in the center that have made our country progress like never before. The UPI is the best example of that. Cashless transactions are a blessing and ensure that we do not have to handle 'unclean' cash. This is important when we consider the recent pandemic.

My appeal to the politicians is that they consider building another dam in my state because the centuries-old Mullaperiyar dam might collapse any time and even the New York Times reported about it. It has garnered international attention but the whole thing is bound by civil disputes between the states and the leaders are not doing anything about it. If the dam collapses, our whole state will be washed away and so will the internet cables that provide to the whole of south India. So, I hope they will make haste and try to build a dam before disaster strikes.

There are a lot of new trains that might probably replace the older ones gradually. The tickets are very pricey and I am not sure how the general population will be able to afford it. I hope there will be more trains for the average citizen. As it is, a train journey is very cumbersome if you are traveling in a local train due to many factors such as the heat, people who do not pay for tickets, and yet travel in the reserved seats. Crimes are also there and often people get away with it before the police arrive. So, I guess the new executive trains are a boon to the traveler who wants a better experience.

The people of India should vote wisely because a lot is dependent on the candidate who wins. The local MP or member of parliament can use the funds allocated to him/her and use it for the betterment of the community. A person who is true to the voters should be elected and not based on the party's strength and such. The right candidate will go to any lengths to make sure that his or her constituency develops and progresses.

Recently, we came to know that a local politician had borrowed money from our friend, a painter who works hard painting houses. After the time limit, he requested the money and she refused it many times. He did get his money back after pleading and she gave it to him finally and cursed him. This incident has made me more wary of such politicians.

Another joke is the garbage collection scheme. Every person in our village has to pay a monthly sum of 50 rupees to garbage collectors. We were ready to pay and did pay the amount but after collecting the money, they refused to take the garbage stating that they would accept only empty bottles and biscuit covers and such. They also stated that we have to pay the amount even if they did not collect the garbage. They went on to threaten that we would have to pay a hefty fine as well if we did not pay the money. I am not sure what is going to happen in the coming months and whether or not we would have to pay a fine.

Politicians who work for the development of the country are rare. I do hope we get to see such people come up in the years ahead. Education does matter as was proved by the floods of 2018 in Kerala which happened because of the huge miscalculations by an uneducated politician.

This is why - I again state - Vote wisely.
