Under a Dim Rainbow
limp and oily
splays
in Dorothy's lap
all courage long melted
ruby heels busted
the Tin Man stands paralyzed
rusted from his plaintive tears
the scarecrow
resolute
intellectually aloof
has turned his back
veins and ripples
though the zig-zag tracks
of darkly-seeded poppies
neurotransmitters pool
in overgrown grassy pits
it's a silky quicksand
blanketing and warm
a slow seductive suffocation
a chemical high granted
to those willing to sink
into the depths
under a dim rainbow
petals wilt and dull
flowers drown in opium
imagined wheat fields
ripped up by the root
the ideal homestead
scorched and blackened
there was never
any place
like home
but still the garden grows
sleepy and askew
wild and eternal
