The Agony of War: A City in Ruins (An Original Poem)

The walls have been broken
The gates have been destroyed
The city is in ruins
And the people have been fed to the beasts

The remnants in hiding, the remnants under seige
Women cry in hide outs, young men dig for safety
Maidens faint in search of what can protect
Babies in agony of losing their milk's source

Decent men cringe under the voice of oppression
While the truth has been slaughtered on the altar of deceit
Chaos and death roam the streets, terror stands guard at the doors
And lawlessness now holds the sceptre of authority

Whose fault to bear?
Whose blame is it?
What wrath!!
What disdain!!!

They fed freedom to bondage in the days of their liberty
They traded peace for war when it was in their power to rule
When it was within their grasp to protect
In the days when peace was like water covering the sea.

So what tears flow?
What terrible sound of groaning and gnashing of teeth do I hear?
Tell the strong "the days shall be long"
And to the weak "this fate is sealed"

Who can save? Who can deliver?
Who can defeat this iron fist of darkness?
And crush this terrible reign of terror;
To make secure the hope of freedom?

Repentance! Repentance!! Oh! Repentance!!!
Only then can they hear the sound of deliverance
Only then will the footsteps of freedom become louder
And the messiah they seek appear as light from out of darkness.
