LightBender

“The heavens declare the glory of God,
    and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”

- from the songbook of ancient Israel...

Why does it seem that the only poems I write these days are tributes to friends who have died?

Nevertheless, I live in the sure and certain hope of the bodily resurrection Jesus promises his followers. And yes, you are invited to escape death and enter into eternal life. Believe in Jesus, the Creator/God of the cosmos.

The HEET telescope. Optical design by Eugene W. Cross

LightBender

by Duncan Cary Palmer

Memories, like beams of light
Trace pathways through my brain,
Bouncing betwixt mirrors of the mind,
Reflecting on a friendship
Spanning nearly forty years,
A fellow of a rare and special kind.

Was it a puckish demiurge
That birthed him in our realm?
We knew him as a brilliance très sublime.
In waves of HEET and light
He brought the galaxies to earth.
His genius lingers, plain for all to find.

I watched him like a firework
In bursts now slowly fading.
We viewed a universe so bright
Through instruments that capture light,
God's glory in the sky—Intoxicating!

Bathed in bright intensity,
In phase with spectral energy,
The prism of the years displayed his skills.
But even rainbows bend down low, and—
Mixed with murky hues below—
They tarnish with the stain of earthly ills.

Yet I still hear his chuckle echo down discussions past.
Oh, that I might discourse with him once more!
He coached me on the finer points of optical design;
I gleaned a tiny shiver of his lore.

Rayleigh had criteria that limited our vision;
But why subscribe to bound'ries for our lives?
Though Noah's rainbow promise lasts,
We've lost longevity of old;
Our paltry four score years do not suffice.

One final trace, life's fading ray, bore him away, alas.
His index of refraction slowed him down.
Yet, shadowless he dwells with Father in the light of noon.
The True Light will restore his life
When time is opportune.
My friend, I'll see you soon.
