In 1821 the British government appointed Sir Charles MacCharthy, then Governor of Sierra Leone, to take charge of the British settlement in Ghana as well. When he arrived he saw that trade was disturbed because the Asante were harassing the coastal peoples.

He decided to fight Asante. In 1842 he met them at Bonsaso near Tarkwa in the present Western Region.
The British force was taken by surprise and the governor was wounded. He killed himself to avoid capture ;

His head was cut off and the skill is still preserved in Kumasi, the capital of Asante. The Asante were eventually defeated two years later near Dodowa.
