Journey's End - for Lewis and Clark - Photography

I'd like to think that when Lewis and Clark made their Journey of Discovery, they arrived to a beautiful scene of the Pacific Ocean - sunny and everything, but in reality, if they were lucky they spent their final day of the journey through here (minus the modern buildings, obviously... )

If they were unlucky then an early winter storm could have been howling through the trees.

Whatever the weather - and I'm sure it's in their journals somewhere - they arrived very near modern-day Seaside and Warrenton, Oregon in November 1805 - and built a structure very much like this:

Fort Clatsop - Lewis and Clark National Historical Park

Spending four months here, including Christmas, they bequeathed Fort Clatsop to the local Clatsop tribe and began their long journey east again in March 1806.

This specific National Monument is the second reconstruction on this site - after arsonists burned down the old one in the early 2000s, shortly before the bicentennial activities were supposed to start at the site.

This additional memorial is situated in the Turnaround in Seaside, Oregon. It's commemorating the salt cairn that Lewis and Clark built and used to preserve meat for their return journey.
