Nikon Z6 & Z7 — Official

Nikon finally revealed long-awaited mirrorless models — and Nokishita (through Nikon Rumors) proved once again as a reliable source…

In a yesterday’s early presentation through Nikon Rumors site there were several question left open — for example, price lists and battery life. And we can also update some of the important specs…

The most important info — price and availability:

Nikon Z7 available in late September:

  • Body only = $3399
  • Body with the 24-70mm F4 S lens = $3999

Nikon Z6 will be available in late November – two months after the Z7

  • Body only = $1995
  • Body with the 24-70mm F4 S lens = $2599

Lenses:

  • Nikkor Z 24-70mm F4 S = $999 ($600 as a kit alongside the Z7 or Z6)
  • Nikkor Z 35mm F1.8 S = $599 (ship in late September)
  • Nikkor Z 50mm F1.8 S = $599 (ship in late October)
  • FTZ adapter = $249 ($149 if you buy it with the Z7 or Z6)

There were rumors that FTZ adapter will have translucent mirror (fortunately not true) and that it will be free of charge if you buy it with Z7 or Z6 (unfortunately not true). At least you won’t have to worry about using your (massive?) collection of F-mount lenses on the new bodies :)

  • Announced: Nikkor 58mm F0.95 Noct

Here are some good news — Nikon already has nice selection of Z-mount lenses in their three Year Lens Roadmap:

There is an urge of the early reviewers to simplify comparison with Nikon’s DSLR models, describing Z6 as “mirrorless D750” and Z7 as “mirrorless D850”. But that comparison is very shaky. Aside from the similar resolution, new Nikons are completely “different animals”. For example, Z-mount has flange distance of only 16 mm (shorter even from Fujifilms XF mount 17.7 mm), which makes almost everything adaptable to the new mount. Both new Nikons are much better video platforms than DSLR ever were. There must be said, for the sake of future users preference, that Z6 is optimized for speed and video, and Z7 for the uncompromised photo quality.

Still, for the sake of comparison, and because of an enormous DSLR user base, let’s see updated specifications compared to D850:
