Black & white photography - Ancient statues as photo objects (10 photos)

Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean might just be the most remote island in the world. It's located thousand of kilometers away from the coast of Chile. But most of us know the name of the tiny island because of the statues that are spread across the island. When I was here, I did visit most of these ancient sites. This is one of them. Called Ahu Tongariki. I have chosen a black and white version. As you see I have also been playing with multiple exposures. It was the first time I tried and had no idea of how to do it! Just have to exercise.

At this place you will find 15 restored statues carved in stone. They are standing on the largest platform for ceremonial use, you will find on the island. These huge moai are standing with their back towards the sea. I think I read somewhere that they are standing with their faces turned towards the village in front of them. To guarde the people living here I should think.

In 1960 an earthquake hit the Chilean coast resulting in huge damage and the death of thousands. It also caused a tsunami in the Pacific Ocean. Waves were as high as 11 meters making them higher than the moai. Some of the statues were scattered around the area. Some had landen many meters away from the platform they had been standing on. The waves caused considerable damage, but it was restored in the 1990s.
