Gibraltar ha sido un bastión inexpugnable gracias a ser una península con grandes acantilados, además de sumarle los fuertes y murallas. Pero para llegar a ser defendible necesitaba una gran dotación de militares que proteja toda esta infraestructura. En el siglo XVI la ciudad española de Gibraltar no tenía suficientes defensores para proteger toda su extensión y sufrían ataques de piratas árabes que saqueaban la ciudad.
Gibraltar has been an impregnable bastion thanks to being a peninsula with large cliffs, in addition to the forts and walls. But to become defensible it needed a large military force to protect this infrastructure. In the 16th century the Spanish city of Gibraltar did not have enough defenders to protect its entire length and suffered attacks from Arab pirates who plundered the city.
Por orden del rey Carlos V en el siglo XVI se construyó una gran muralla desde el mar donde terminaba la ciudad española hasta la cima del Peñón.
By order of King Charles V in the 16th century, a great wall was built from the sea where the Spanish city ended to the top of the Rock.
En la parte más baja la muralla se abría al Sur por la Puerta de África donde estaban las zonas de cultivo.
The lower part of the wall opened to the south at the Africa Gate where the cultivation areas were located.
Sobre la puerta se conserva en mal estado el escudo de España de Carlos V, y los de la ciudad de Gibraltar.
The Spanish coat of arms of Charles V and those of the city of Gibraltar are preserved on the door in poor condition.
Después de cinco siglos aun se ven unas defensas impresionantes por su altura y su grosor.
Desde el exterior de la ciudad, lo que ahora es el cementerio de Trafalgar se puede observar la altura que llegaba a tener en algunas zonas.
After five centuries, the height and thickness of the defences are still impressive.
From the outside of the city, what is now the Trafalgar cemetery, you can see how high it was in some areas.
La parte alta de la muralla está construida algo más al sur. Está fabricada en cuatro partes hasta llegar a la cima del Peñón. Posteriormente en esta zona se construyeron puertas de paso para poder cruzarlas.
The upper part of the wall is built further south. It is built in four parts until it reaches the top of the rock. Later, gates were built in this area to allow crossing.
