En el Peñón de Gibraltar siempre ha habido un problema de suministro de agua potable. Todo fuerte que puede quedar asediado por mucho tiempo debe de tener una fuente de agua para poder aguantar las embestidas del enemigo sin tener que rendirse. En este lugar habían algunos acuíferos y pequeños manantiales para dar de beber a una pequeña población. Esos manantiales fueron canalizados por los españoles llevando el agua al centro de la ciudad de Gibraltar.

In the Rock of Gibraltar there has always been a problem of drinking water supply. Any fort that can be besieged for a long time must have a source of water to be able to withstand the onslaught of the enemy without having to surrender. Here there were some aquifers and small springs to provide drinking water for a small population. These springs were channelled by the Spanish to bring the water to the centre of the city of Gibraltar.
The Fountain of the Four Gargoyles.
Al sur de Gibraltar, en punta Europa, los españoles construyeron el primer embalse del Peñón.
South of Gibraltar, at Europa Point, the Spanish built the Rock's first reservoir.
Bajo esta área de recreo, se encuentra una cámara sujeta por columnas donde el agua se filtraba por la roca.

Beneath this recreation area is a chamber supported by columns where water seeped through the rock.

Bajando por unas escaleras se accede al pozo.
A flight of stairs leads down to the well.
Su nombre se debe a una capilla que se encontraba justo encima. La capilla de Santa Bárbara que estaba mantenida por las monjas de la Iglesia de Nuestra señora de Europa que es una de las primeras construcciones en Gibraltar.
It is named after a chapel that was located just above it. The chapel of Santa Barbara which was maintained by the nuns of the Church of Our Lady of Europe which is one of the earliest buildings in Gibraltar.
