It was a beautiful day and I didn't think twice, I went out to take some photos.
Half an hour's drive from where I live there is a beautiful temple designed by the famous sculptor Antonio Canova considered the greatest exponent of Neoclassicism.

I decided to go closer and take some pictures of an ancient church, there in Possagno. It was a few steps away and I had never considered it.

As I walked towards the church I passed in front of Canova's house, I never visited it, I don't know if it is possible to do so.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century the old parish of Possagno needed urgent restorations and Canova, originally from the town, had been repeatedly invited by the community to finance the expenses. Already before 1812 the architect had proposed to rebuild the church and presented a project, however the heads of families were reluctant to bear the huge costs.

All'inizio dell'Ottocento la vecchia parrocchia di Possagno necessitava di urgenti restauri e Canova, originario del paese, era stato più volte invitato dalla comunità a finanziarne le spese. Già prima del 1812 l'architetto aveva proposto di ricostruire la chiesa e ne aveva presentato un progetto, tuttavia i capifamiglia furono riluttanti a sostenere gli ingenti costi.
In a letter dated August 5, 1818, sent to his friend Giannantonio Selva (architect of the La Fenice theater in Venice), Canova declared that he had decided to rebuild the church of Possagno completely at his expense. The idea was to create a grand circular building with a pronaos, a reference to the Pantheon in Rome, but with Doric columns, such as the Parthenon in Athens. He commissioned Pietro Bosio to design the building, which were then supervised by colleagues from the Accademia di San Luca and Selva himself. Died the latter in January 1819, Canova found the support of Antonio Diedo.

On 11 July of that year the possagnesi in celebration welcomed the countryman for the laying of the first stone.

Canova was unable to see his work completed since he died on 13 October 1822; the works, according to his will, were entrusted to his half-brother Giovanni Battista Sartori. In the following years the original project underwent some changes, also to make room for the Pietà group and the artist's tomb.

As I razed a paved road, turning around, I saw the bell tower and the temple getting further and further away.
