Leshënki, or "Children of the Forest," is a catch-all term for mythical forest beings in Rhûnnish folklore. They are the children of Leshy and Kikimora. The fairest and friendliest of them are the dryads, who are normally very peaceful, but will fiercely defend their forests when they must.

Dryads spend most of their time singing and dancing in clearings deep within the forest, and their music is said to stir the trees and make them dance as well, stirring the air above. It is said that when the trees stop swaying and the air is still, that means that the dryads have stopped playing, and bad things are happening or are soon to happen.

Dryads normally fight with slings, flinging stones at those who try to cut down their trees without their permission. It is said that dryads' favourite pets are squirrels, and that they taught squirrels to fling nuts at intruders as well. Should the intruders manage to cut down a tree, then the dryads will use the wood only to craft weapons, such as bows and spears. Sometimes, people will leave offerings of arrowheads and spearheads to gain the favour of the dryads if they need the protection of the forest. When angry villagers came into the forest hunting for goblins, they brought bags of arrowheads to leave for the dryads. The goblins left no such offerings, and so the dryads, unlike their parents or siblings, remained enemies of the goblins.

The most brutish of the Leshënki are the marsh ogres, who are said to lurk in stagnant ponds and swallow any living creature that gets too close. Supposedly, they come out to actively hunt their prey only when they feel cheated. Ogres began to rise en masse from the marshes after the goblins arrived. The ogres hated eating goblins, but because the goblins scared everything else off, the ogres started roaming far and wide looking for food. The Goblin King promised the ogres easy meals if they were willing to venture into villages and eat the people who lived there.

One creature followed the Goblin King and his army out of the woods, but never joined in on the slaughter of villagers, instead observing the carnage from a distance, then feeding on the corpses of monster and innocent alike. This creature was the most terrifying of the Leshënki, even Leshy and Kikimora feared it: Chuyinka. Unlike nymphs, goblins, or ogres, this creature is actually real (in the context of my fictional world, of course), but no fairy tale portrays it accurately. For starters, chuyinka are predators, not scavengers.

This isn't the first time I've showed this creature, but given all the additions to Hero Forge since then, I thought it appropriate to show it again.

Tomorrow's post will probably be something different. I have introduced all the characters, written a synopsis of the story and its impact on Rhûnnish culture, but I still need to translate it, which could take a while. Perhaps I'll have a short video to share, or perhaps some nature photography.
