LOCAL GOVERNMENT AUTONOMY: WHAT THE MASSES STANDS’ TO BENEFIT

It is no longer breaking news that the Nigeria senate has okay Autonomy for Local Governments. This simply means that the Local Government does not need the approval of the State Government to execute projects under its jurisdiction and will no longer run a joint state, Local Government account.

Local Government Autonomy as far as i can remember, has been clamored for since the 6th assembly by many Nigerians. The idea of Local Governments being the closest to the grassroots or community is not just in name, but also to assume the responsibility of the basic infrastructural and socio-cultural development of the grassroots and as well, the community can hold them accountable for any deficit.

Running a separate account from the State Government and empowerment of the Local Governments to take their own decisions on the development of its jurisdiction is not the only advantage of the autonomy but also its accountability to its populace. Since the importance of Local Government is a function of its ability to generate sense of belongingness, safety and satisfaction among its populace, it serves as a means for Government and people to intermix, relate and more quickly than any other means resolve or dissolve issues that may have heated the system. It also empowers the Local community to be self-reliant.

The Local Government Autonomy is coming at the right time when people are clamoring for restructuring. It is a sign that #Nigeria is moving to that position of self reliance, inclusion of the Nigerian populace in the affairs of the country that we all dream of.
