NHL Talk: Take a Look at How Goalies Have Changed Over Time!

Check Out These Photos to See How Goalies Have Changed Over Time!

I find it fascinating to see how small goalies used to look in the net back in the day. The Vezina trophy has been awarded to the best goalie in the NHL every year since the 1926-27 season.

I've chosen 4 goalies from 4 different eras to show you how things have changed.

Vezina Trophy Winner 1926-1927 Season George Hainsworth

Height 5 feet 6 inches  (1.68 m ) 150 pounds (68 kilos )

Looks like lots of room to score here! Photo credit

Vezina Trophy Winner 1959-1960 Jaques Plante

6 ft 0 in (1.83 m) Weight 175 lb (79 kg) He was a huge goalie for his time!

Jaques Plante is credited with being the first goalie to use a mask. Although tall for his era he looks small! Photo credit

Vezina Trophy Winner 1981-1982 Billy Smith

 5 feet 10 in (1.78 m) 175 lb (79 kg)

Here we see a bigger blocker and glove but look how small the pads are compared to today. Photo credit

Vezina Trophy Winner 2016-2017 Sergei Bobrovsky

 6 feet 2 in (1.89) 182 pounds (82 kilos)

Look at the size of the pads and the catching mitt. The net is the same size but looks way smaller! Photo credit

Isn't it Amazing to See How Goalie Equipment Has Change?
