Effective ways To Teach Mathematics To Your Children Or Students
Mathematics is one of the best subjects to facilitate; sometimes your kids or students may not be very good in logic or numbers, therefore you can develop such students to the extent that she or he becomes the best in mathematics. During my short period in the teaching line I found out that some children are very good in mathematics while others are not so good. Though, there are factors that may hinder some to be good and to be poor: also there are ways to make the poor ones become the best. Mathematics is very easy to teach but the method in which you teach them is very important.
THE FOLLOWING FACTORS TO BE CONSIDER BEFORE TEACHING MATHEMATICS
Your Kids Or Students Interest: This is very important for teaching mathematics. When new students are being enrolled to the school I teach, one thing I ask them after introduction is ‘what do you want to become in future?’ Some of them may not really understand my question because of where they come from i.e nobody has ever asked them such a question just like the case that happened to one of my students in grade 7. I asked Michael , ‘what do you want to become in future?.
He replied to me and said, “Master, I want to become a roadside mechanic,” and I said why? He said, “roadside mechanics used to be wealthy” . I told him that you choose an important career but I have to wait before I can give you an answer. I told him to bring his parents to school so that we could discuss; the next day, he brought his mother to the school, we had conversations together and I found out that the man that Michael referred to as ‘wealthy man’ is a mechanical engineer. The man studied mechanical engineering in university; he is really wealthy just like what Michael said.
I went to the class, I told all the students that the man Michael was referring to is a mechanical engineer, and he studied mechanical engineering in university. And I said, whatever you want to become in future, you need mathematics. If you want to become a lawyer, you need mathematics to do some calculations, manage your money, time, planning, judgement etc. I said even the earth is mathematical in nature; therefore if you want to be rich, wealthy and enjoy your life on this earth, you need mathematics.
They were all amazed and said how? And I gave them perfect answers with mathematical expressions because I wanted to stir their minds toward mathematics.
Because they believed in what I said, 98% of the class always was attentive whenever I facilitated mathematics. Many of them told their patients that they wanted one-on-one lessons with me after the closing time.
I got 100% attendance in my class, and I made my assignment compulsory to all students and failure to do it is attached to pornishment.
You can use this method for your kids at home if they are not interested in mathematics, tell your children the reasons she or he needs mathematics and give him mathematical expressions that will confuse him/her to work hard and make sure to arouse his/her mind to love mathematics.
Start From Simple To Complex: the best way to teach is to start from simple to complex or concrete to abstract. No matter how hard the subject is, you can use this method to achieve your goals. students/children often run away from mathematics because of the teacher's mistakes. Whenever I teaches mathematics in the class, about 75% of the students believed that the work is very simple. I teaches some hard topics in mathematics in simple ways that the most dull students scored 50% in examinations. Even though the instructional materials are not available in the school, I managed to improvise instructional materials that will make the topic very simple to the students.
When I wanted to teach my students in grade 7 addition of fractions, I realized that the majority of them do not know how to find Lowest Common Multiples (LCM); I taught them LCM with real life objects before teaching them addition of fractions. About 90% of them got all the exercises I gave them.
Your Methods Of Teaching Is Very Paramount: there is no best method to teach but you need to combine different methods while teaching. 21st century learning requires 60% participation from the students. In fact, you are there to guide them: it is no longer 18 centuries that teachers would do 70% of the work. In 18 centuries, teachers stood in front of the class and talked from the beginning to the end. Teacher would be the one working everything on the board for students.
Today, teachers are there to guide students not to stand in front of the class and present a topic for 45 minutes. If you’re doing that, the majority of the students would get tired because they are not doing anything and get discouraged, they might even be sleeping while learning is going on. I don’t do all the talking in the class, the moment I do one example, I give a student an opportunity to do the second example and allow all the students to contribute, pair them together to discuss how he/she arrived in answer and give 3-5 classwork with different methods to them.
Most times I ask them to exchange their books to their friends for marking, the reason I do that is to realize the errors they have made and correct themselves, give them more details of how some of them performed very well and give them hints of different methods used by many students.
I give my students the opportunity to do the corrections on the board and allow others to correct him/her while doing it. My students are always active while I am teaching which saves me from stress.
Give more Assignment: one thing I do in my class is that I never leave my class without giving my students assignments to do, this is the best way to get feedback from the students. Giving them assignments will make them familiar with different strategies to use, i give them the tough and simple work to do. The next day, I called some of my students out to work it on the board for other students.
These strategies worked for me, most of the students that have poor background in mathematics started doing well, those that thought they can never know mathematics are doing wonderful. Therefore, the gap between the brailant students and poor students in academic performance is closer than ever.
