Useless information #24 - As if they weren't weird enough... TIL platypuses are also venomous!

Nature puzzled everyone with these folks.

It seem some scientists had a little problem teleporting an otter, a beaver and a duck and ended up mixing them.

  • They lay eggs!
  • They feed their young through lactation but have no nipples!
  • They don't have stomach (apparently they don't need one)!
  • They are born with teeth!
  • They use electric fields to find their preys - electrolocation. How? They create the electric fields via muscle contraction (making Schwarzenegger look like a baby)!

And Today I Learned...
Males have a spur on the back of their hind feet that is connected to a venom-secreting gland.

The venom is not life threatening to humans but it can cause severe pain. So be careful when you hold your platypuses!
