Toadflax

Toadlax grass contains the alkaloid dl-peganin, flavonoid glycosides linarin, pectolinarin, neolinarin, acetylpectolinarin, cyanidin glycosides antirenine chloride, Iridoids aucubin, pectins and resinous substances, and choline, phytosterol ( 170 mg%), folic, citric and malic оrganic acids.

Pharmacological properties and use. The complex of chemicals that are contained in toadflax provides versatile therapeutic properties. Experimental observation has established that the alkaloid peganin lowers blood pressure, increases pulse filling, slows down heart contractions, increases tone and increases the amplitude of contraction of intestinal and uterine smooth muscles and reveals choleretic and laxative effects.

The use of peganin in a clinical setting has positive consequences in the treatment of patients with atony, paresis and paralytic intestinal obstruction, due to severe surgical interventions, and progressive muscular dystrophy and myopathy.

Liquid alcoholic extract of toadflax has mild laxative properties and provides a good therapeutic effect in intestinal atony.

The alcoholic extract also exhibits diuretic properties.
