Hey dear community, first of all I would like to welcome you all to my new post and hope you had a day full of interesting experiences! In this article, I would like to talk a little about blacksmithing and hope you are able to expand your knowledge.
Here you can see some works that are supposed to represent the traditional Japanese art of blacksmithing Mokune-Gane and to clarify the topic better, I used AI to create these pictures. The history of this technique is already several hundred years old and it is assumed that the origin was already towards the end of the 16th century and the name is derived from the Japanese word Mokume for wooden eye and Kane for metal and refers to the characteristic properties and the charisma of the works is somewhat reminiscent of wood. As one of the most important figures when it comes to this art of forging is Denbei Shoami (1651-1728) and he was already very impressed by general art of blacksmithing when it comes to creating swords and decided to revolt the topic and create a very own direction and Mokume-Gane is about connecting different metals or alloys with each other in such a way that they create a very own contrast and it is important that the metals or colored alloys that were used have similar physical properties and the same melting point. Typical characteristics are the different colors as well as the abstract patterns of the manufactured objects and in Japan this technique became more and more popular and also in Europe it arrived a few centuries later. This special kind of forging is mainly used for the production of jewelry, swords, bowls or other objects and through the abstract ornaments, numerous works have been created that are artistically at a very high level.
