Narendra Modi also known as Narendra Damodardas Modi is the 14th and the current Prime Minister of India. He took the office on 26th May 2014. Born on September 17, 1950, in Mehsana, Narendra Modi is the first ever Prime Minister to be born after India attained Freedom from the United Kingdom. Narendra Modi is the leader of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) and he led the party in the 2014 General Elections to a majority in the Lok Sabha, the first since the 1984 General Elections. Narendra Modi fought as a candidate in two constituencies: Varanasi and Vadodara and won in both. Narendra Modi was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP after his party's victory and was appointed Prime Minister by the President of India. Third of the six children born to Damodardas Modi and Heeraben Modi, Modis family belonged to the Modh-Ganchi-Teli community categorized as Other Backward Community by the Indian Government. Born in a poor family, Narendra Modi sold tea in trains as a boy and later ran a tea stall with his brother near a bus terminus.
Modi discovered the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh at the age of eight and he started to attend the shakha of RSS. Modi was inducted as an RSS balswayamsevak (junior cadet) by Lakshmanrao Inamdar. Modi completed his higher secondary education in 1967 from Vadnagar . Modi also received a degree in Political Science from a distance-education course from Delhi University as well as a Master of Arts degree in political science from Gujarat University in 1982. Modis marriage was arranged by his parents when he was a child. At the age of 13, he was engaged to Jashodaben marrying when he was 18. Reportedly their marriage never consummated .He entered BJP in 1987 and became the national secretary of the party in 1998.
Over the years he has helped the party strategize election campaigns in several states. Narendra Modi became the Chief Minister of Gujarat in October 2001. He was promoted to the office at a time when his predecessor Keshubhai Patel had resigned, following the defeat of BJP in the by-elections.
Narendra Modi has served Gujarat as a Chief Minister for four terms (2001-2002, 2002-2007,2007-2012 and 2012-2014). Despite the criticism on his government surrounding the 2002 Gujarat violence, Modi enjoyed huge support in his home state and is also credited for the high economic growth of Gujarat.Narendra Modi has co-authored Setubandh a biography of RSS leader in 2001, in 2007 a book comprising collections of his poems called as Aankh aa Dhanya Che was published.
Modi was named as the Best Chief Minister in a 2007 survey by India Today. Modi also has been few of the Indian politicians to appear on the cover page of the Asian edition of Time Magazine in 2012. Modi also has been included in the 2014 Time 100 list of most influential people. Forbes Magazine ranked him 15th most powerful person in the world in 2014 and 9th most powerful person in 2015. Modi received the highest civilian honor of Afghanistan in June 2016.
