Katharsisdrill recommends: Ali Farka Touré & Toumani Diabaté

There is no doubt that an element in blues comes from West-Africa - but of course nobody really knows what and from where precisely. It's like linguistics - qualified guesses.

But the music of Mali, the desert country West of Mauritania, Senegal and Guinea is one of the names that is always named.

In this very beautiful recording the blues guitarist Ali Farka Touré, that was internationally recognised after he made a record with Ry Cooder, playes with the kora virtuoso Toumani Diabaté - in a long flowing improvisation. I was introduced to this wonder on Diaspora some years ago and am still finding the most incredible music Mali.
