The Slits - I Heard It Through The Grapevine

The Slits are one of the most interesting

bands of the first wave of British punk/post-punk bands, and, although critically acclaimed, don't seem to get mentioned often enough amongst other names like The Clash and the Sex Pistols. The band was originally formed in 1976 in London, England, with the most known line-up consisting of "Ari Up (Ariane Forster) and Palmolive (a.k.a. Paloma Romero, who played briefly with Spizzenergi and later left to join the Raincoats), with Viv Albertine and Tessa Pollitt replacing founding members Kate Korus and Suzy Gutsy" (Source - The Slits: Wikipedia). The group had an incredibly interesting sound, which was somewhere between punk rock and reggae, but not really solidly in either genre. Unlike most of these song posts, today's tune is a cover, which appeared on the band's 1979 album Cut, which is considered a turning point in punk rock, when post-punk was just beginning to become a genre in its own right. This song definitely fits the reggae-ish vibe, particularly the guitar parts, though you can tell that its not really a reggae song, with a much more rock and roll sort of energy. The vocals are grimey and off key at times, but have so much character, and really give it a unique edge.
