Mortal Kombat – Movie Review

Not every movie is a masterpiece, some movies are just pure fun, like Mortal Kombat. You get exactly what you sign up for, cool fighting scenes and great upbeat music in the background of said fighting scenes, terrible plot and some terrible acting. You know the worst part of the movie before you even watch it, the new character. But it was still a fun movie.

But don't worry, the movie starts with the introduction of animosity between the two coolest characters: Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) and Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim). I wouldn't recommend watching the 7 minutes posted online of this movie by WB, it is so cool that you should just watch it with the movie. From that moment though, you understand the connection to the new character, even if you missed all the online guessing that guessed it right. The movie follows Cole Young (Lewis Tan) a not so great MMA fighter who usually fights if someone doesn't show up. His skill never improves during the movie. He fights shirtless so we see the dragon mark on him. It's a birthmark and an invitation to participate in Moral Kombat. Jax (Mehcad Brooks) finds Young and recruits him.

The leader of Earth's warrior is Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee). And yes, just like the advertising and the trailers showed, Kano (Josh Lawson) is a good guy, well, an anti-hero. Other cool good guys that show up are Liu Kang (Ludi Lin) and Kung Lao (Max Huang). Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano) is also in the movie. Everyone else who you feel is missing is sequel material including one very big tease at the end of the movie which will please all hardcore fans.

While the good guys had a lot of charisma and personality. Well, all except Young. His character is boring and the actor does nothing to elevate the role. Shang Tsung (Chin Han) is actually a really boring villain and does not compare to our previous Shang Tsung (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) who was both campy and really just pure evil and fun. Mileena (Sisi Stringer) was also disappointing and why was she not wearing pink or purple? Luckily Sub-Zero is so cool that he makes up for all of the other terrible villains. They use his powers in a very original way. I mean the VFX and fight choreography really put some serious thought into his fighting scenes. Although Kano has the best lines in the movie as he has so much humor and charisma.

The fighting scenes are great. Except for Young who never really learns how to fight well. Everyone else have really cool fighting scenes and they have their powers from the computer games and it looks so cool. And yes, they kept the original theme song from the first movie and just gave it a really cool remix, which is now my favorite upbeat song.

The script is bad. The plot makes no sense even for a Mortal Kombat movie. Some of the dialogue is cringe worthy. But no one comes to watch this movie for the plot. I love the games, I loved the first 90s movie, and I liked this one. I am not sure if I like it as much as I do the first movie, I need to watch it a few more times to decide. But I did have a lot of fun with this movie, it scratched that Mortal Kombat itch and I hope we get a sequel soon.
