I bet most of people think work is just work and they do it for money. Even though they feel life is like a treadmill and get bored, its hard to quick a job due to financial reason. Somebody spends the most of their time in their life to work that they hate it. I think its a punishment like the myth of Sisyphus.
Meanwhile, people might have hobby that motivates their heart although it doesnt earn money. Its common dilemma for the most of people that what I love and what I have to do for money are not aligned. However, I strongly believe it`s now the age that people can make money doing what they love thanks to digital technology despite of side effect of it.
Before technical advice, I would like to highlight very basic things to do at first. The very essential condition of monetizing your passion is you should enjoy it. You should treat it like a game. Think about it. What kind of people on the earth feel bored when they play game? That`s because playing game is literally fun and users are not forced to play it by others. Therefore, you should choose what you love as monetization of passion could be usually bumpy and painful at the early stage due mainly to absence of immediate financial benefit.
Unfortunately, most people dont even know what they love. So herere tips to help you figure out what could be the one. Firstly, you should talk to yourself. There must be something you really like to do. It could be computer game, music, shopping, talking, sports, etc. Make a list that you like and Google “How to make money doing something that you like. You would be surprised how many people already monetized what you like in various ways.
Secondly, identify whats your edge. Its easy to miss the uniqueness of something that comes easily to you. You need to understand even if X is piece of cake to you, it doesnt necessarily mean its same to others. Everyone has single bright talent at least and recognizing own edge is the first step to monetize it. If theres something Y that comes easy to you but people dont know how to despite of strong demand, you could be a millionaire in a short time.
Lastly, trace your child dreams. When we were a kid, we all had dream no matter how unrealistic was. However, we faced the tough reality and abandoned it. Trace what you wanted to do when you were young and it`s effective way to discover your passion.
In my case, when I was a kid I liked reading a book and I dreamed to be a teacher. However, I was encouraged to study economics and business as high income jobs generally prefer such majors. Although I studied finance and worked at investment bank, I continued reading a book and writing that I`m passionate. I like learning something and expressing my idea as it could give an impression to people, which may make great change. However, it was nearly impossible to manage work and hobby simultaneously due to intensive workload at investment bank and I chose my passion, aiming to make it lucrative.
I used to be an IT sector research analyst and I strongly believe technology is reshaping the world and business model of various areas.
