Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Steem

They're mine. Let me tell you how. They can be yours, too. These four cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and Steem, are part of me. In this article, I talk about how I buy these & keep them safe. Happy Birthday to me as it is my first anniversary, my first full year on Steemit, right now, currently, as of Sunday, the 17th of June, 2018, Fathers Day. I've been preparing, writing, researching, working on, this post, since Saturday. This is a rough draft. How does it work?

How to Keep your Bitcoin Safe?

Step one, download a Bitcoin wallet, for example. You can also get wallets for Ethereum, Litecoin, and other alt coins. I use an Electrum Bitcoin Wallet. Step two, click here on how to install (create) your wallet. If this is your first time, you can create a new seed (special password). Why invest in Bitcoin?

What are Seeds, AKA Mnemonic Phrases?

Seeds are like back doors back into your wallet, just in case. Like a thought bomb for trees (wallets). A seed is a group of words, passwords, AKA pass phrases. A seed may be twelve random words. Rat banana silly dead angry waking dead birds flowers oriental fat radical. That could be a seed. Your wallet can make new seeds for you. Why? You can unlock (restore) your wallet with your seed and/or private keys, maybe, probably. So, save your seeds because seeds are like a Reset Password thing you may see on Facebook or other websites. When you forget your password, you click on a button, and they email you a new password or link so you can create a new password. A seed is a little different than that, but the point is that the seed helps you recover wallets, addresses, money.

You can write down seeds.

Try to keep your seeds offline. Better safe than sorry. If you have to recover (restore) your wallet, you open up your wallet and tell your wallet that you already have a seed. Type it out. After that, you can create a new password, or can at least try to create a new password. You don't have to remember your old (former) password, generally. There may be exceptions depending on the wallet you're using, maybe. You can export your private keys (PK) for your wallet. You can find your private keys in the menu of your wallet. Normally, a private key is a collection of addresses associated with our account or wallet.

Make Sure Your Wallet Works

Third, send money to your wallet, to your receiving address. Maybe somebody can send you money. You can skip this step if you're confident in what you're doing. But you want to make sure you know how to use your wallet like an independent bank account program. You want to make sure you know what your receiving address is.

Wrong Address?

If somebody sends you money, but to the wrong address, then you may not get the money, like mail sent to the wrong mailing address or email address. For example, my Bitcoin receiving address has been 1JY9EVYaB8SafhK8TvFoqs7vyRzmcRJGyv

and my wallet may not show me that address but I can still receive Bitcoin that is sent to that address and people can support me that way, for example.

Did my Receiving Address Change?

Your wallet may change your receiving address. When you open up you wallet, like I did this weekend, you may see different addresses. So, you may feel that your former address is gone, expired. You can try to send some Bitcoin to your former address to see if it works. For me, it still works. You may see your former addresses in your private keys. That may mean they're still there. If you're reinstalling your wallet, and you recover from your former seed, your wallet may display a new address, but your older addresses may still be there. Your wallet may collect money you may get from your former addresses.

How Can You Keep Your Bitcoin Safe?

First, keep your seeds protected.
Second, keep your private keys backed up.
Third, keep passwords offline, saved, copied.
Fourth, try Ubuntu over Apple, Microsoft.
Fifth, don't keep all your eggs (investments) in the same basket (coin).

Thank You For Reading

This post includes 4 of my favorite cryptocurrencies, currently. This article is a rough draft and I'm having keyboard issues. Maybe sticky keys. Maybe old wireless USB keyboard. Maybe a Bitcoin faucet is slowing my computer down. Maybe it is from uploading photos to Facebook. Maybe too many Firefox tabs. I'm not happy with technical difficulties. So, I may update this post in the future, especially as it references many topics and many things. For example, there are currently over 1,600 cryptocurrencies. I may talk more about them. I may want to write more about any of the paragraphs here. I've been researching some of this the past few days as I was trying to answer all of my own questions about all of this. I still have even more questions. I have more to say. Stay posted. Eat oatmeal.
