How to build a mining rig for Monero, Zcash and Ethereum [PART 3]: Choosing the components; Motherboard

The main feature we look for on a motherboard is the number of GPU slots it has, as this will determine how many graphics cards or GPUs can be attached, and hence their total hashing power. For example, 6 PCI Express slots mean they can fit 6 Radeon GTX 1060 cards with a hashrate of 20 MH / s each - or a combined total hashing power of 120 MH/s. A PCI Express slot is a connection port on the motherboard and are often white, black or beige.

We chose the ASRock H81 PRO BTC R2.0 (LGA 1150), considered one of the best cards for mining crypto-currencies. This motherboard uses DDR3 memory and has 6 PCI ports (5 PCI-Express 1x + 1 PCI Express 16x).

Alternatively, we can opt for the Biostar TB250-BTC card, which uses the latest Intel socket (LGA 1151), is compatible with DDR4 memories and has 6 PCI ports (5 PCI-Express 1x + 1 PCI Express 16x).
