I have two different versions of the SU-152 self-propelled artillery gun for sale. Notice the difference? No? Ah, well, permit me to give you yet another history lesson.

In February 1943, production began of Object 236, a self-propelled artillery device ("device" is the direct translation of "ustanovka," BTW) built on the chassis of the KV-1S heavy tank.

The idea behind both Object 236 and its conceptual predecessor, U-18, was to put the mighty 152.4mm ML-20 gun-howitzer (so-called because of its function as both a cannon and howitzer) onto a tank chassis, producing a mobile artillery unit.

In the present day, however, no-one thinks of the SU-152 as self-propelled artillery. Most know it as the "beast killer," because of its reputation for destroying Tigers and Elefants (Ferdinands) with contemptuous ease during the Battle of Kursk. Seriously, who cares about things like accuracy and armour penetration when you are lobbing 110-lb shells packing enough explosives to blow the turret clean off a Tiger? The total opposite of the Sherman Firefly, but just as effective.

Such firepower, however, is not without drawbacks. Fumes from the propellent charges tend to accumulate, resulting in the crews coughing their guts up (even more so than normal), so beginning in September 1943, the SU-152 was fitted with ventilation domes on top of the casemate.
