Honesty - Is it always the best policy?

Warning: If Santa and the Tooth Fairy are real, don't read this post

I was taught as a kid that honesty is the best policy. Honesty is a virtue and that dishonesty is wrong and should not be an option.  But when it really comes down to it, dishonesty is more important than honesty.  Have you ever had to tell someone some bad news but instead, you decided, "I'll just tell them a little white lie."  We do it all the time when it comes to real life. We tell our daughters and sons that their pet ran away or it went to a happy farm, but really the pet just passed away and we just didn't want to break it to them.  Dishonesty can be good when it comes to things in that variety, but when it comes to breaking the law or bending the rules it's not a good thing. So we shouldn't say dishonesty is bad and honesty is the best policy, we should actually say that dishonesty is wrong but can be good and honesty is right but not always correct.

Honesty is virtue but dishonesty is a value.
