Martin Luther King Jr. (1929 – 1968) was an American Baptist minister and activist. He became the lead spokesperson in the Civil Rights Movement.

He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolence and civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs and inspired by the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi.
