If they respect you, respect them. If they don't respect you, still respect them... Love unconditionally, give your best for the comfort of others and the satisfaction of you conscience. Not because they reciprocated it, but because it is the right thing to do.
Remember, scarcity of prey and abundance of grass does not turn a lion to a herbivore. If the lion (an ordinary animal doesn't change it's nature because of situations, why shoul you??
